I’m hearing that it could take up to 2 years for the trial to begin & that it could last up to 2-3 years. Not sure if the players will be tried separately or together. NHL teams will likely try to void their contracts or suspend the players but the question hockey experts are asking what happens if the accusations end up being dropped or if they’re found innocent by a jury? Considering the players could be barred from playing professional hockey for up to 5 years teams (and the NHL) could be setting themselves up for an expensive lawsuit from the accused players. No wonder the Senators chose not to re-sign Alex Formenton this offseason. It’s one of the rare good offseason moves Pierre Dorion made!
Well, for comparative purposes, consider the situation of baseball pitcher Trevor Bauer. He was not even criminally charged, let alone convicted, and the only civil case brought against him went in his favor. However, he was suspended from baseball for 2 years (reduced to 194 games) and the Dodgers got off the hook for paying most of his salary. He was then released and forced to go play in Japan, where he pitched well, but nobody in MLB is interested in him, even though he is now a free agent. This is even though he is a Cy Young Award winner and still has really good stuff, and despite the fact that most MLB teams badly needing starting pitching help. In modern MLB, you need 8-9 quality starting pitchers to start a season, either on your roster or ready to come up from AAA. And the vast majority of MLB teams just don't have that, so that when 2 or 3 starters go down and they have to start calling guys up, it's untested kids who get eaten alive because they have no command of their fastballs, and even if they can throw strikes, they don't have the ability to consistently hit the corners and bottom of the zone.

So if these guys have character clauses in their contracts that enable voiding based on felony charges, they are basically fucked, and they can't sue anyone for anything. But it would depend on their contracts. They will probably end up, in a best case scenario, like Bauer did, playing hockey in some B league in Europe.

Regarding Bauer, I think the guy is only guilty of like rough consensual sex, which he may have taken too far in some cases. I would be inclined to sign him for peanuts on a one year "prove yourself deal", and a contract that says no hookers or rough sex complaints or any of a laundry list of naught acts, masturbation only, zero tolerance on anything else, or it gets voided. But MLB GMs lack the guts to stand up to the backlash from signing such a hot potato character, so he will have to go back and pitch in Japan, or maybe Korea.

Carter Hart now one of 4 NHL Players Charged With Sexual Assault:
Speaking for Hart, Megan Savard and Riaz Sayani, from Savard Foy LLP in Toronto, emailed ESPN to "confirm he has been charged with one count of sexual assault. He is innocent and will provide a full response to this false allegation in the proper forum, a court of law."

In another correspondence with ESPN, McLeod's lawyers -- David Humphrey and Seth Weinstein of Greenspan Humphrey Weinstein LLP in Toronto -- added that "McLeod denies any criminal wrongdoing. He will be pleading not guilty and will vigorously defend the case. None of the evidence has been presented, let alone tested in court."

Julianna Greenspan of Greenspan Partners LLP in Toronto, the representation for Foote, later emailed ESPN saying "Cal is innocent of the charge and will defend himself against this allegation to clear his name. What is most critical at this time is the presumption of innocence, and the right to a fair trial that everyone in Canada is entitled to."

And finally, in a Tuesday night statement to ESPN, Louis P. Strezos and Kaleigh Davidson, Dube's representation, said "he will plead not guilty and maintains his innocence. He will defend the allegations in court."

"The four NHL players have been on paid leave, according to sources. However, league sources said the players' statuses with their respective teams will likely change if charges are pressed -- they could face suspension, by their teams or by the NHL, see their contracts terminated, or end up on a commissioner's exempt list. The players are all 25 years old."

Rangers beat Avs in OT as Quick Shines in Goal:
At age 38, Jonny Quick is having a fabulous season. He has a .918 save %, 7th in the NHL, and is clearly the best backup goalie in the NHL. Goalie depth!!!!!!!!

Another dominant performance today by Connor Hellebuyck: 35 saves, .972 GAA and a 2-1 Jets win. The Jets are riding him like a horse as far as he takes them! Player of the day:

How did you guys interpret the enthusiastic point blank wound up slapshot for the empty net goal by Ridley Greig, and the ensuing cross checking of Greig by Morgan Rielly after this empty net goal shown in the video below?

I have to say that Greig winding up as he did to point blank a shot into an empty net was a bit much for me:
I find it interesting that Maple Leafs coach said that Rielly's play was "appropriate." It seemed so to me as well.

It looks like Morgan Rielly is facing a suspension of 6 games or more because the NHL has given him an opportunity for an in person hearing:
Assuming Rielly and his attorney argue that he was just standing up for Leafs pride in the face of a humiliating gesture, should he be suspended?

Riely deserves a few game suspension for his cross check, since when there is a code on how to score in an empty net? Some players in the NHL have their own interpretation on how to behave on the ice, it’s getting ridiculous. There a thing called the NHL rules book and that should be the only thing that matters and the refs should stick to it, like any other professional sports. Otherwise this league will keep on looking like a circus to other sports fans.

Captain F,

I agree. There will likely be a suspension or this will lead to repetitions of the behavior. There is no rule against winding up for slap shots on an empty net, but there is a rule against cross checking.

2 game suspension.

Greig Empty Net Goal Stirs Debate Over Empty Net Goal Decorum!
Anyone remember the lame effort by Patrick Stefan to score an empty net goal that was so lame he flubbed it? This is the polar opposite of the Greig empty net goal:
So do you bury the empty netter like Greig, or try the gentlemanly touch like Stefan did?

Rielly accepts invitation to in person hearing Tuesday in New York City:
Rielly has never been suspended. This is looking like it will be his first NHL suspension. But he will probably be respected in his locker room.
