Although I generally do not like the idea of other countries incessantly either looking to the USA for help as the world's policeman/fireman/ER doctor/financial benefactor or else criticizing it when extends or flexes such authority, this is one area where I think the USA needs to step to the plate, at least for the countries in North America (something it has already done by giving AstraZeneca vaccine surplus to Canada and Mexico). But we need to focus on getting the USA at least 70% vaccinated before that international aid is lent. Until then Canada should be on its own and looking to its owns leaders and resources.

The proper solution is for countries to contribute to Covax. I believe the US has made a sizeable contribution.
Canada did a big contribution financially but did what is referred to a "passe passe".

If 70% is the threshold I suspect Canada will get their own their own. The vaccine pipeline was slow to start but there are a lot of vaccines arriving now.

Lot better rate than 500,000 + dead, @ that rate the virus is surely taking its time “mutating itself out” lol
TNB, I have found that you are quite condescending towards people you don’t agree with which is evident in a lot of your posts. FYI, I have spoken personally with a very brilliant physician that heads Infectious Diseases at a major hospital system here in the US. She has talked about all the variants and about how she’s not too concerned about them due to some very effective vaccines that are available now and that like I said, if a virus mutates too much it will lose its ability to infect people as efficiently as it used to thus leading to its demise. I agree with her.

“Mutations can even lead to a virus becoming so weak that it eventually disappears completely. This was the case, for example, with the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus.

Starting in November 2002, the first SARS pandemic spread from southern China to almost all continents within a few weeks. As the first pandemic of the 21st century, it aroused great fears among the global population. However, SARS ended up claiming only 774 lives worldwide within six months.

By the summer of 2003, the number of newly infected persons worldwide was declining continuously, and in May 2004, the World Health Organization already declared this first SARS pandemic to be over.”

ssj3 , its quite obvious that this coronavirus is quite different from the SARS virus and it hasn`t finished mutating. Some of the new variants are much more dangerous that the original Wuhan bug. Countries like Brazil that are runaway petri dishes for new variants are of special concern.
On the bright side US scientists working with the military , are on the verge of going to initial trial on a new vaccine that will be able to block all variants of the coronavirus including some common cold and flu bugs.

@cloudsurf I was never comparing the two viruses..I was using the quote as an example of a virus that mutates too much to the point where it’s basically non-existent. The same concept still holds true for Covid as well.

The purpose of mutation is to create a better defense or a better offence.
Covid has enough variants to survive and keep mutating even if certain mutants become harmless and /or die out.
The only thing that will stop its advancement is a wide spectrum super vax.

Haven't been in-town since January 2020 and haven't been on MERB as frequent as before. Are kissing allowed these days?

The recent re-up of the BBFS thread got me wondering how is kissing OK given that either party can bring COVID home and transmit to others especially vulnerable family members as well as other customers/providers.

There isn't such a thing as a "purpose" for a virus. Mutations just happen as error during the replication. Sometime it has no effect, sometime it is detrimental to its replication and we do not see it and sometime virus get an advantage. That is what we see with British, brazilian, south-african variants. Only way to stop this is vaccinating as much as possible so we slow down replication impairing production of "errors" = variants.

For the first time since the pandemic began, Canada has passed a grim milestone, with more new Covid-19 cases per capita than the U.S. So much for planning that summer trip to Montreal:

I used "purpose" for the mutation not the virus. You are right though....I used the wrong word and should have used" outcome'.

And here I thought that you believed that the All mighty was punishing mankind`s abuse of nature with this tiny partial alive bug.

Freedom unfortunately is a casualty but this is really a horse race between science and nature.
There will have to be a booster shot next year against new variants and then probably a jab every year after just like flu shots. Get used to it life will never be the same again.
Silver lining is that masks are not only effective against covid19, but also allergies, lung damage from pollutants. colds and the common flu.

No, I thought the borders would be open by end of May and we would be able to come back. I never expected this to go south for the Canadians like it has.
