Donald Trump said Canada was doing a good job of controlling the spread of COVID-19 and said closing the border could be one of the very first preventive measures to be lifted.
He made the comment Wednesday during his daily press conference from the White House.
The two neighboring countries have imposed a travel ban across the border for non-essential travel. The ban, which has been in effect for almost a month, is set to end on April 21, unless extended.
The decision to reopen the border, however, does not depend solely on American will, while the United States is still grappling with the heaviest death toll in the world in terms of people infected with COVID-19.
The epidemic is particularly virulent in the state bordering New York.
In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reiterated that measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus will have to remain in place for several weeks.
