Gaby, Trump is the culmination of this madness, not the beginning. Before Trump got into office, hardline Republicans drove another Republican Speaker of the House (John Boehner) into retirement.

The ultimate problem for Republicans is they see government as the problem. So if government doesn't work because they themselves broke it (aka a self-fulfilling prophecy), they're OK with that. And if most (not all) of their voters don't care as long as they're opposing Democrats, what incentive do the representatives have to change? Independents and moderate Republicans weren't ok with the direction of the GOP, but the type of voter that voted for a Marjorie Taylor Greene or Lauren Boebert (who are on opposite sides of this current fight for interesting reasons) don't care or even know the minutiae of what's going on.

Some YouTube show from weeks ago called McCarthy "an unprogrammed Roomba who just wants to be speaker." Dude is aimless except for wanting the speakership. That goal isn't going as planned.

Whoever is eventually selected by Republicans will have the near impossible task of running the House and obtaining consensus among the GOP ranks of rebels, election deniers, insurrectionists, nihilists, etc. Better for the country if an outside compromise unity Speaker is selected. Someone like retired moderate GOP congressman Fred Upton of Michigan. He may get the 218 votes required mostly from Dems and a few moderate Republicans.
