Possibility. But i'm not interested in hiring someone who just got fired.

By the way, as i predicted a week or so ago, i'm still fairly certain that the Leafs will hire current Tampa assistant GM Julien Brisebois as their GM. This would be a major coup for the Leafs if it happens.

If not, don't be surprised if Ken Holland joins the organization in some type of capacity once his current contract runs out. He's underpaid with the Red Wings and i'm sure he'd welcome a change of scenery. He nearly joined the Leafs organization a few years ago, but they chose to go with Brian Burke instead.
WANTED julien brisebois lost between tampa bay and toronto

What is happening to Cody Franson? Any news? Is there any chance he's back in Leafs nation? I haven't heard anything.

He's still unsigned. There are 4 teams after him. His #1 choice would be to re-join the Leafs. He loves the city of Toronto and the direction the organization is going. Toronto would love to have him back, but the problem is that there isn't any room right now on their defence. They'd have to move someone out. Which means that he's received better offers elsewhere, but is likely waiting to see if the Leafs will free up some room for him.

My guess is that he'll sign a short-term deal elsewhere in order to test the market again and try to sign in Toronto.

Leafs sign Kadri to 1-yr contract extension

The Leafs have signed restricted free agent Nazem Kadri to a 1-yr $4.1 million contract extension. It's a fair deal and he'll have to prove over the next season that he deserves a multi-year more lucrative contract. If he fails to impress coach Mike Babcock, he'll likely be shipped out of Toronto.

Leafs make a trade

The Leafs once again did something the habs rarely do: they made a trade.

TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Sunday that the club has acquired forward Taylor Beck from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Jamie Devane.

Beck produced eight goals and 16 points in 62 games with Nashville last season — his first full year in the NHL after spending time with the American Hockey League’s Milwaukee Admirals.

The 24-year-old native of St. Catharines, Ont. was selected by the Predators 70th overall in the 2009 NHL Draft after spending his four-year junior career with the Guelph Storm alongside current Leaf centre Peter Holland.

Devane has spent the majority of his professional career with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, posting six goals, 15 points and 253 penalty minutes in 118 games.

The 24-year-old Mississauga, Ont. native also appeared in his first two NHL contests with Toronto during the 2013-14 season.

Devane, originally selected two spots ahead of Beck in the 2009 NHL Draft, missed the 2015 AHL playoffs after having season-ending surgery to repair a lower-body injury.

Wow!!! That one came right out of left field! I love it! :thumb:

What happened to the guy from Tampa you said would be the next Leafs G.M. ?? I would have thought all your "sources" would have tipped you off about Lou. Oh yeah, that's because it wasn't already in the public domain.

You missed my post where i explained the entire situation. I was told by a source yesterday that the Leafs also lost interest in Brisebois when Lou contacted Shanahan to tell him he may be ready to leave the Devils.

If you're in the market for a car and a Ferrari suddenly becomes available for a great price, you then tell the Honda dealer that he can keep his Civic. :D

I know the saying it's just business not personal, but this arbitration case will not be good for the relationship between player and team. Good luck trying to sign him next year.

You just answered your own thoughts......it is JUST business. Money talks also would be appropriate here. Most arbitration cases settle before the date anyways so we will see how this plays out.

Exactly. They were saying the same thing when PK Subban was about to go to arbitration. That he'll feel the habs were low-balling him, etc....and he'll never re-sign with them once he's UFA. But a deal was reached in the last hour and both sides were happy. Especially PK, who literally robbed the habs. Bergevin wasn't very happy and was pissed that the owner overuled him and ordered him to give Meehan and Subban whatever amount they wanted in order to sign a maximum deal.

My guess is that Bernier and the Leafs will meet halfways on a deal just prior to arbitration. That's why a team submits an amount which initially appears to low-ball a player. They do this in order to get the player to meet them halfways and then they're friends again. That's the nature of good negotiating and as many players have learned, taking a team to arbitration often means all gloves are off. That's just how it goes.

Bernier Signed

TORONTO - As the Toronto Maple Leafs launch into a full-scale rebuild, they've signed Jonathan Bernier for two important years to see if he's their goaltender of the future.

Bernier signed a US$8.3-million, two-year deal Sunday after going to arbitration but before the ruling could come down. He'll count $4.15 million against the salary cap for the next two seasons as the organization continues to evaluate what they have in the 26-year-old.

"The thought process is trying to get a goaltender, and hopefully it's Jonathan, to be the stabilizer for this franchise," general manager Lou Lamoriello said on a conference call. "Having that one (extra) year is both good for Jonathan and the organization, whether it's the organization evaluating or whether it's Jonathan proving."

Bernier goes into his third season in Toronto with a 2.78 goals-against average and .918 save percentage in 113 games since being acquired from the Los Angeles Kings. After helping the Leafs to a playoff position in March 2013 before getting hurt, the Laval, Que., native struggled at times, during a rough season for the entire team, with a 2.87 GAA and .912 save percentage.

That performance, Bernier said Sunday, didn't put him in a good position to negotiate as a restricted free agent. He said a long-term deal was never discussed but instead the Leafs and agent Pat Brisson wanted to determine whether his new contract would be for one, two or three years.

"Two years it gives me a little bit of comfort, and I don't have to think this year about re-signing next summer," Bernier said. "I can just really focus on playing hockey and not have to worry about the following year."

What two years gives the Leafs is time as they are remade under president Brendan Shanahan, the new-look front office and coach Mike Babcock.

This will be the third straight season with Bernier and James Reimer splitting goaltending duties, and Lamoriello implied it's back to being an open competition.

"I think that right now I have a total open mind, and certainly I know Mike has the same," Lamoriello said. "These are our goaltenders, these are people we believe in, and now we just have to go out there and give every support mechanism to have the success that's needed."

Without the pressure of going into another contract year, the onus is still on Bernier even if the expectation isn't making the playoffs. A first-round pick, 11th overall in 2006, Bernier hasn't yet shown the Leafs that he deserves a long-term, big money deal.

In 175 NHL games with the Los Angeles Kings and Leafs, Bernier is 76-67-20 with a 2.63 GAA and .916 save percentage. Lamoriello said Bernier didn't have to "prove" anything but pointed to consistency as something the Leafs would like to see.

"I think I have to prove to my teammates and the organization that I can be the guy that can bring this team into the playoffs and deep in the playoffs, too," Bernier said. "I want to be consistent, and that's what I'm going to focus on all year."

Signing Bernier was the final piece of essential business this off-season for Toronto, which also hired Babcock as coach and Lamoriello as GM, traded Phil Kessel and signed a handful of unrestricted free agents. The Leafs hired a new goaltending coach in Steve Briere, who Bernier said he worked with recently for a few days.

Lamoriello said Bernier "has the ability, no question" to be a starting goalie. It's his hope that Bernier plays well enough this season that it's evident he's the man in net for years to come.

"Hopefully he has a year that pushes us, that is the organization, to speak to him next summer and looking for long term," Lamoriello said

I love this signing, two years instead of one gives Shanny/MISTER Babcock/Lou Lam the time they need to make sure "Big Game" is their guy....Great sigining by three of the smartest hockey minds on the planet :thumb:

Good deal for both sides! I had predicted it all along, that they'd avoid arbitration and meet halfways on a new multiyear contract, which is exactly what happened.

Go Leafs Go! :D

Coaching guru Jacques Lemaire snubs habs & dead things for Maple Leafs; joins Leafs coaching staff

When i heard yesterday that several teams (incl. the habs) had approached former hab, Devils and Wild coach Jacques Lemaire to join their respective organizations, i had a thought: what if the Leafs made a play to hire this coaching genius?? Well, i was right!!! :D

The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Jacques Lemaire as a special assignment coach, the team announced Friday.

Lemaire has coached 1,262 games (617-458-124-63) in his career split between the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild. The 69-year-old has spent the last six seasons in the Devils organization, most recently as a special assignment coach, where he worked with new Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello. He has some experience coaching beside Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock.

“Obviously Jacques Lemaire has a wealth of experience,” Babcock said in a press release. “We had a great relationship from the 2010 Olympics and I’ve asked him to join our staff to help me and the rest of our coaches within the entire organization be the best they can be.”

Lemaire, a two-time Jack Adams Award winner and Hockey Hall of Famer, won eight Stanley Cups as a player with the Canadiens and coached the Devils to a championship in 1995.

Reports first surfaced that Lemaire could possibly join the Maple Leafs earlier this week. Devils beat writer Tom Gulitti asked Lemaire Thursday if it might be bizarre working for the Maple Leafs since he has such a storied history with the Canadiens.

“I've been away so long that the only guy that is still involved there that I know well is [Canadiens head coach] Mike Therrien and [assistant coach] J.J. Daigneault, who I coached,” Lemaire told Gulitti. “But, besides that. [Canadiens GM] Marc [Bergevin] looks like a real nice guy, but I never really knew him before. I knew him because he was involved with Chicago and as a player, but not personally.”

Lemaire is the newest member of a totally revamped Maple Leafs coaching staff. In June, the team named Jim Hiller, D.J. Smith and Andrew Brewer as assistant coaches.
