haha, a rare blown save by Mo kept Andy P from a much deserved win, but the way he pitched in his first start in 2 months was encouraging. like last year, the Yanks could ride 3 horses all the way again, CC, Andy, and Hughes... but i would imagine Burnett will be a 4th starter in postseason, providing the Yanks do get there.

Joe, i am quite appalled at your post suggesting the red sox are on the verge of missing the playoffs this season. you know that there are some very thin skinned and angry sox fans (let alone angry in general) in here. give em a break, there are still 12 games left. Even tho Lackey and Beckett both have 2 starts each left , the sox can possibly win the other 8 and make it interesting by finishing 8-4. Anyways in conclusion, go easy on the sox fans in here until they are at least mathematically eliminated ok??? place nice in other words....

PS. look at my new gift i bought myself :)

Where I belong.
Some strange-but-true statistics:

• The Red Sox are still second in the majors in runs scored (755) and first in OPS (.791).

• The Red Sox lead the American League with 1,098 strikeouts. Then again, they are third with 522 walks.

• The Sox have used 133 batting orders in 149 games. The most common order ...

Scutaro
Pedroia
Martinez
Youkilis
Drew
Ortiz
Beltre
Hermida
McDonald

... was used a grand total of five times. The projected starting lineup with Ellsbury and Cameron in place of Hermida and McDonald was used 3 times.

• Through Sunday, the Red Sox have had 952 games missed by players on the disabled list. They'll end the season at just over 1,000.

• The Red Sox have used 43 different combinations of players in the outfield, their most since 1996.

• The Sox have used 52 players this season and had 54 on the active roster for at least one day.

• The Sox have used 25 pitchers, tied for the most in the AL with the Royals.

Well said GS. It's called buying championships. And, oui ... you can win without spending the most...its called smart management and player development. The Red Sox and Phillies and Rays have done it in years that the Yankees outspent everyone. As a matter of fact so have 5 other teams, while the Yankees outspent all for 10 years in a row and only managed to win 1 championship.

Thank you for your comments.

Yup...sure looked that way last night. Petite had playoff form;)...allowed 7 earned in 3 1/3...
Great to see the Pawsox roll.

Hello Jman,

It looks like someone has adopted the Joe.t style of dispensing a very pure form of "Baloney". The only bad news for the Rays and Red Sox regarding Pettitte is he isn't this bad all the time.

So now with our patchwork team we've taken two in a row from the Yankees...AT YANKEE STADIUM...when the Yankees are trying to clinch the top spot. Is this the best the Yankees have for the playoffs. Oh right, they have Sabathia...who got slauhgtered his last time out.

Not bad for a Sox team some said couldn't compete. Can't wait for Iggy to slink in and give us the old...doesn't matter if we get the top spot...crap.

Nice of the Yankee fans to show their PRIDE and leave well before the end today...lol.

Cheers,

Merlot

Another near monumental collapse in the Bronx...

Well Yankee fans...admit it...you were all scared shitless...again.

http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/columns/story?columnist=oconnor_ian&id=5620348

A depleted Boston team went to the house that Ruth built this weekend and nearly stole another one from the mighty Bronx bombers. On a night where Girardi threw everything out there but the kitchen sink (should I mention the failure of Phil Hughes and the great Mo)...the Paw/Red Sox nearly sent the boys in blue into an even more monumental tailspin than they did in 2004...

Oh, if only if only it could have been...if only...

And while technically, its not over yet...this fan tips his hat to the Red Sox for one of the gutsiest season performances against all obstacles in recent history. I do not believe any team has ever done so well, with so many problems (reference earlier post by Rumples)...AND yes Tito Francona should be named manager of the year...hands down!

As for the Yankees, well I think you boys better hope they find some answers in the next 2 weeks...because they are gonna have an early trip home if they keep playing like they are now.

Have fun,

Jman

The Burnett Disaster: Genius Girardi Sticking with Him.

Hey Yankee fans,

I wouldn't be so "GIDDY" if I were you. It looks like Girardi will be bringing the pinstripe train wreck into the playoffs against the likes of the Rays and the most likely World Series opponents (if the Yankees can possibly get near it) the rock solid pitching trio of the Phillies. Burnett with an ERA of 5.33 and a record of 10-15 has an ERA of 7.28 since August 1 and will probably be the first Yankee ever to have 15 losses and an ERA over 5.00. He's making the Lackey deal look good.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/new-york-yankees-must-not-start-aj-burnett-in-postseason-092710

TORONTO

A question: Does A.J. Burnett need to be on the postseason roster in order to retain his position as Chief Pie Officer of the New York Yankees?

After his scattershot start at Rogers Centre on Monday night, Burnett’s place in the Yankees’ playoff plans should be in jeopardy. But manager Joe Girardi refused to address the subject after New York’s 7-5 loss.

In fact, Girardi remained so tight-lipped about all matters beyond Game 162 that he would have required Freedom of Information Act paperwork to admit that October does indeed follow September on the calendar.

And that is precisely the problem with these Yankees.

Girardi is managing like someone desperate to reach the postseason, instead of a man who fully expects to defend his title.

“I’m not going to talk a whole lot about playoffs until we know we’re in,” said Girardi, whose team has lost 14 of 21. “You gotta get there first. We’re not there.”

OK. But we’re talking about THE NEW YORK YANKEES here. They have a magic number of one. They are not going to end the season on a six-game losing streak. They know they are going to the playoffs. And if they don’t, they should fake it. Or try to acquire Johnny Damon’s panache (if not his bat) for the season’s final week.

Instead, Girardi affirmed two decisions after the loss that run counter to the Yankees’ stated goal of winning the World Series:

Burnett will remain in the rotation, despite his bungling effort against the Blue Jays (2 1/3 innings, seven earned runs).

• CC Sabathia, the staff ace, will start Tuesday against Toronto.

Burnett, with a 7.28 ERA since Aug. 1, doesn’t deserve to start in the playoffs. So he has no business pitching this weekend, during what should be a postseason pace lap against the Red Sox. In this scrimmage, the first string needs to play.

When asked about the postseason rotation, Burnett offered, “Joe’s going to make the decision on his own. He saw what I did last year in the postseason.”

How could he forget? Burnett had a 5.27 ERA.

Sabathia, meanwhile, should be pitching on Friday, not Tuesday. That way, he would start on regular rest in Game 1 of the American League Division Series.

Instead, CC will have seven days off before Game 1. That’s too many for a workhorse who did quite well last October on short rest.

If the Yankees were functioning as their brash, confident selves, Girardi would have worn a self-assured smile after Monday’s loss and told the world that Javier Vazquez would be his starting pitcher on Tuesday.

Yankees whoop it up after clinching playoff spot against Jays
Comments Twitter LinkedIn Digg Buzz Email John Lott September 28, 2010 – 11:13 pm

After the final out, the New York Yankees lined up and shook hands with each other just as they had done 93 previous times this season: no hugs, few smiles, all business.

That all changed when they reached the visitors’ clubhouse in the Rogers Centre, where their lockers were shrouded in plastic and the Champagne and beer were waiting.

Suddenly, it got loud, wet and wild.

Nick Swisher and Joba Chamberlain led the celebration after the Yankees clinched a playoff berth with a 6-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Swisher drained a blue can, grinned and yelled: “This Canadian beer is STRONG! Woo-hoo!”

Swisher earned a World Series ring in his first season as a Yankee last year and was relishing the first step to another championship.

“To be able to celebrate like this? This stuff never gets old,” he said.

Meanwhile, CC Sabathia, who had been brilliant on the mound, towered above a media mob and patiently answered questions that focused on the fact that the Yankees had limped into the post-season.

“Last year kind of felt like things were going our way every time out,” Sabathia said. “It’s not happened like that this year, so I think that’ll help us hopefully in the playoffs.”

The Yankees entered Tuesday’s game with an 11-14 record in September. They had lost five of six, including the opening game of their series with the Jays, in which A.J. Burnett allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings.

But Sabathia, as he almost always does, came up big when it counted, allowing three hits in 8 1/3 innings and posting his 21st win.

No surprise, then, to hear manager Joe Girardi’s reply when he was asked to assess Sabathia’s contribution over his two seasons as a Yankee.

“You get wins,” Girardi said. “You get outstanding performances. He stops losing streaks. He wins games. He gives you innings. He gives the bullpen the night off. He’s tremendous.”

The Yankees still trail first-place Tampa Bay by half a game. The Rays also clinched a post-season berth with a win Tuesday night.

Girardi said he has some “tired bodies” and indicated that resting them will take precedence over winning the division.

“I’ve got to make sure our guys are strong,” he said. “That’s the first thing. I still want our division and I still want home-field advantage. But I can see there’s some tired bodies out there, and this turf [at the Rogers Centre] is tough.”

Girardi said he expects to scratch veteran Andy Pettitte from his scheduled start against the Jays in the series finale Wednesday night. Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez also will get time off as the regular season winds down.

While focusing on winning a playoff spot, Girardi said he had not thought carefully about how to set up his lineup over the team’s final four games.

“It’s something I’ve got to think about tonight, how I’m going to do it,” he said.

RED SOX finish with PRIDE; Congrats to the Rays on the AL East Crown!

Jeremy Hermida homered in the Red Sox loss to the Rays as they are swept in Boston by the team to beat in the AL East this year.

Well the Red Sox of Boston(+Pawtucket + Portland) finished a challenge filled season (19 DL players missing a total of 1,008 games) by beating the hapless, yet playoff bound Yankees of New York at Fenway Park...the Red Sox spring season squad squashed the first string Yankees 8 - 4 to end the season.

As the Rays of Tampa Bay (aka the team to beat in the AL East) finished the season with the best record in the AL as AL East Division Champs by winning in KC. CONGRATS Rays!

tampa_bay_devil_rays_logo_2.jpg

Beating the Yankees in 2 out of 3 games for the second time in a week the Red Sox continued to expose the many weaknesses and shortcomings the Yankees face as they enter the post season...a post season that at this point appears as if it will be short for the pinstripers should they continue to play with the lackluster style and performance they have in September and October.

This years Boston effort resulted in 89 wins, wins that were earned by the team and earned by contributions of many. Thank you to every Sox player who contributed.

Boston_Red_Sox.jpg

Special Congrats to a class guy Mike Lowell as he retires from the game...Thanks Mike!

Mike%20Lowell%204.jpg

And a special thanks to the guy who finished the year with a .266 BA; 32 HR; 102 RBI ... a guy who was "washed up" back in April...thank you Big Papi...hope we see you in a Sox uniform next season.

david-ortiz.jpg

Here's to a couple of great playoff series...play 'em hard and play it right! In other words Jeter, Posoda and Arod - leave the acting to the actors and actresses and just play ball.

Go Rangers...I happen to admire the philosophy that Nolan Ryan has brought to that team.

As for the Yankees first series...Go Twins! You have to like an organization that does it right and brought the likes of Mr David Ortiz to MLB. I'd call it the only series for the Yankees...but they seem to have a way to beat the Twins, so maybe, just maybe they will get the the ALCS...had they matched up against Texas in round 1 - I think it would have been curtains for sure.

Have Fun,

Jman

Hello Jman,

In an unexpected way it was a very exciting season. Thanks to our surprise heros Dan Nava, Darnell McDonald, Ryan Kalish, the not so surprising Clay Buchholz,...the likes of Adrian Beltre, Victor Martinez, David "Big Papi" Ortiz, John Lester, Daniel Bard,...Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Jason Varitek (while they were there), we stayed in the hunt until September when the constant run of injuries would have knocked any other team deep into 4th place at most. In the end we still played with real guts and knocked the Yankees right off of their $200+ Million pedestal in the very last game of the season. THANKS to the real Manager of the Year, Mr. Terry Francona, when many teams could have declared a disaster and packed it in long ago...the 2010 Boston Red Sox showed the Yankees just how playing with PRIDE is defined. With guts and determination. These were the best 89 wins any team ever earned...and with undeniable dignity.

Very special thanks to Mike Lowell for all you gave us. A great team player...and a great gentleman. BRAVO!

Cheers,

Merlot

Question, who in the hell is David Bard, is he a baseball player, and if so which team did he play for?.

As far as Mike Lowell goes, good riddance.
