Well, I'll give Jeter credit for one thing...he's got brass ones asking for these numbers...LOL!!!

Also seems he's finally admitting he had some checkbook envy...

Jeter & Yankees Are Far Apart
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 26 at 10:12am CST]
10:12am: Jeter is asking for less than $150MM over six years, according to Jim Baumbach of Newsday (on Twitter).

8:06am: Derek Jeter’s representatives are asking for at least $80MM more than the Yankees are willing to offer in negotiations for the free agent shortstop, according to Bill Madden of the New York Daily News. The starting point for Jeter and agent Casey Close was six years and $150MM, according to Madden, who reports that the Jeter camp is not budging from demands for a $25MM annual salary. Alex Rodriguez’s contract “is at the crux of Jeter’s and Close’s stance,” according to Madden.

The Yankees have offered Jeter multiple deals, including one that would pay the 36-year-old $45MM over the course of the next three seasons. Close suggested that the Yankees' tactics are "baffling," so Yankees GM Brian Cashman encouraged Jeter and his agent to test the free agent market in search of a more generous deal.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post proposes that the Yankees could sign Jeter to a six-year $75MM deal that could become more lucrative if Jeter reaches incentives based on plate appearances. The suggested deal would pay Jeter $20MM per season from 2011-13 and shield the Yankees from the luxury tax.

While not Victor, Salty, still only 25, will be a decent major league catcher, something Cervelli will never be. My choice for backup is still Jason Varitek. Salty is a much better hitter from the left side of the plate, Varitek from the right. They will have to bring in a bat to replace Victor and the likeliest bet is still Adrian Gonzalez, who will instantly be the best hitter in the American League.

Well Rumples...this could be part of a deal for AGonz...then we sign Crawford...hmmm???

"Jacoby Ellsbury's reportedly strained relationship with the Red Sox and his attractiveness to potential suitors make him a strong trade candidate this offseason, according to Paul White of USA Today. Boston GM Theo Epstein has hinted that the Red Sox roster is in need of a "restocking," according to White, and Ellsbury could be a good fit for the Padres, Diamondbacks, Angels, Braves, Mets and Cubs."

Sigh. If only the Loafs played baseball; actually, they probably play baseball as well as they play hockey.

The 2010 Red Sox were a 100 win club, who lost 11 wins due to injury. Even without Martinez and Beltre, they are a 93 win club. Considering that the only players over the age of 33 are Drew and Ortiz, they only lose another 2 due to age in 2010. They are currently a 91 win team with $43 million to spend this winter.

The Yankees won 95 last year, but let's takeaway one that they gained due to the Sox injuries. Take away another 7 with the losses of Jeter, Pettitte and Rivera and you have an 87 win club. Looking over the remaining roster, you find Burnett, Posada, and Rodriguez well into the decline phases of their career. Take away another 6 and you have a .500 ballclub.

The big question is can Cashdollar spend his way to get his aging club back into contention? Not likely.

Wasn't this the jackass that always said "It's only about winning and not about money?" Bwwwaahhhh!!! What a piece of shit, I thought this jackass had some class. 6 years and nothing less than $25MM/YEAR is absolutely one of the most absurd, retarded things I've ever seen and there's two people in this thread who post tons of absurd retarded things!!

This is really f'n fun to watch the Yankees follies this off season.

Hello Jman,

You can now put Jeter's photo next to "CA-HONES" in the dictionary. This is the fruit of the trap the Yankees have set for themselves that I have been warning of for years. The Yankees in their slobbering, money-burning lust for players have set the standard rate of pay on their team with extremely excessive contracts to many players. Now that Jeter wants his piece of the pie by Yankee standards the Yankees are now in the embarrassing position of having to pay a player who has been the LEGACY/ICON/POSTER BOY of the team for the last 15 years who isn't worth the obscene rates the Yankees usually pass out at a whim.

In one way no one can blame Jeter for his demands since the Yankees set the standards. But at 36 years old, and after his worst full year ever, the Yankees offer is actually very reasonable. The problem for them is "reasonable" hasn't been part of their vocabulary since free agency started. The conundrum is no other team is going to come anywhere near what Jeter is asking. So the Yankees are stuck with resolving the issue. Do they come close to paying what he asks or put Jeter through an ordeal of either settling for far less with the Yankees or going elsewhere to play for far less. For the man who has been the face of the Yankees their offer is humiliating considering the $33 million Rodriguez gets until he's over 40.

The Yankees will never pay Jeter near $150 million over 6 years, or. So the outcome will be humiliating one way or another whether Jeter stays and eats bitter crow, or leaves like a used up pinstripe idol. Considering the distance between the offer and the demand I can't see how Jeter can stay and keep his self-respect...and it's the fault of the Yankees who set all of this up by creating expectations of grossly excessive contracts. And if it ever comes to this (it won't)
jeter-as-a-red-sox.jpg
the fans will never forgive Cashman, Steinbrenner, or Jeter.

I totally agree. But why should Jeter ask for less than $25 million per year when this is what the Yankees do habitually? He should have asked for four years. At age 36 asking for 6 years is ludicrous even for Yankee standards.

Unbelievable,

Merlot

Actually the Leafs are in a better position than the sox were last season, as they sit only in baseball terms, one game out of a playoff spot, where as the sox ended up how many games out? lol. ALSO, the Leafs have not won in a long time, but can you imagine going 86 YEARS without winning a Championship???

Yes, very easily. The Leafs are already halfway there with not even a HINT of the finals since 1967. I know you're mathematically challenged lg, so for your benefit I'll point out that that is 43 years ago and that 43 is exactly half of 86.

Now, consider the fact that the Leafs last year had one of their worst seasons in history (29th out of 30 teams!) and are doing miserably again this year (to the surprise of NO ONE except you and your Leaf-loving buddy).

Consider that legend-in-his-own-mind Brian Burke (patron saint of the Boston Bruins!) has mortgaged his team's future for years down the road, while greatly improving Bruin chances through his idiotic Kessel trade and his GIFT of Rask.

We won't even mention that he also traded for the most overrated player in the league (as voted by his fellow NHL players!) and made this team cancer the freakin' captain!

Consider also that the Leafs are the property of the Ontario Teachers pension fund and those educators couldn't give a damn about on-ice success as long as the Leafs remain a cash cow - and remain a cash cow they do, since Leaf fans are stupid enough to continually support Canada's National Embarrassment by providing sellout attendance to a team of failures who couldn't even make the freakin' playoffs for more than the last half a decade.

86 years? For the Leafs that's peanuts - they'll probably go 186 years without sniffing at a Cup.

I don't know a whole lot about hockey, but I'm real good at arithmetic. Sounds to me like the Maple Leafs really, really suck.

seems red sox fans as a whole have more fun in the offseason than they do "during" the season.... why is that? Oh yea,.... for you K........ wait for it... wait..... ok, BWHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAH!

:)

ps, i agree with Mr.T, the red sox "village' is in a "Dire" state this offseason, and really, it is so funny to see! While our biggest trouble seems to be to sign a guy who no one else will pay big $ for, Jeter, meanwhile the red sox cant sign ANYONE! let alone KEEP Key Parts that helped them finish ahead of the Blue Jays into third place and not slip to fourth last year lol.... too freaking funny! Atta boy theo, AT TA BOY! :)

Jeez, I wonder why. Actually, the Yankees biggest problem won't be signing Jeter. The biggest problem will be when they pencil him in at shortstop and leadoff.

I agree also, but who cares, it is THEIR MONEY, they can spend it the way they choose, they have always played by the rules, and if they wanna pay Jeter 15mil, fine, (although i DO NOT agree with what he has demanded, i think 45mil over 3 years is more than generous) even if they up that offer, fine, i wont lose sleep over it, again, it is THEIR MONEY, they are gonna raise ticket prices anyways each year no matter what the payroll, it is called BUSINESS. Seems the red sox have some if not the highest ticket prices in all of baseball but stick it to their fans by letting guys go they really need and by not going after key free agents that will get them up to second place and sneak into the playoffs, but nope, there wallets are as tight as can be, of course not as bad as a guy here who is to cheap to go to a hockey game, seems the last time i met him i heard this squeaking noise when it came time to pay the tab at the resto, everyone looked around as to what the hell was going on, it was he opening his wallet, after dusting it off..... in the spirit of giving, i have a nice big can of wd-40 all gift wrapped for him for Christmas, "Tis the Season"
