Well deserved for Lidstrom. A great leader and one of the top 3 defencemen of all time (after Orr and Harvey).

Agree with u joelcairo! It has been great to watch a great defenseman especially after guys like Potvin, Stevens, Bourque left the game. I had to add Stevens because he was a game changer with his defensive zone coverage. Fwds were afraid to cross that Devil blueline!

Lidstrom has always made the game look so easy and fluid! And he has stayed healthy his whole career. Hope he returns for 1 final season.

I wouldnt mind Matt Carle to quarterback the powerplay IF the Leafs cant sign a more experienced/better PP QB (Wiz, Erhoff, Markov) Ok im joking about markov, but would love to hear the habs fans cry about how he sucks if Burke did sign him away from the habs... dont want him tho, he is injury prone now, not worth a $5mil risk.

They should move or buy out 6 overpaid guys instead of moving Jeff Carter.
The likes of Meszaros 4M , Matt Carle 3.8M , Zherdev 2M, Leighton 1.5M , Boucher 0.925 , Briere 7M (yikes) dont justify their pay-cheques!

But if Philly had to move Carter, I would love to see him join Tampa Bay! Someone will have to replace Lecavalier soon or later... crap, even Jeff landing in Toronto would be nice to see. Carter + Kessel... hmmmmmmm...

Montreal re sign's Kostitsyn

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed left-winger Andrei Kostitsyn to a one-year deal worth US$3.25 million, the club announced Thursday.

The 26-year-old scored 20 goals and added 25 assists in 81 games for the Habs in 2010-11.

Kostitsyn, who was set to become a restricted free agent July 1, added two goals in six playoffs games as Montreal bowed out to the Boston Bruins in the first round.

"Andrei Kostitsyn is an important part of our group of forwards, and we are happy to have agreed to a contract extension with him," Canadiens general manager Pierre Gautier said in a statement. "As a player drafted and developed by the Canadiens organization, Andrei ranks year after year amongst our point leaders."

Born in Novopolotsk, Belarus, Kostitsyn was the Canadiens' first round selection (10th overall) in the 2003 entry draft.

Kostitsyn also made $3.25 million in 2010-11.

Darche re sign's with habs

The Montreal Canadiens siged forward Mathieu Darche to a one-year, $700,000 contract on Friday.

Last season, Darche set personal-highs with 12 goals and 26 points in 59 games.

"We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Mathieu Darche," said Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier. "Mathieu is a classy veteran player who displays great leadership and determination, and we strongly believe he can help us achieve our goals in the upcoming season."

Since 2000-01, the 34-year old Darche has registered 60 points in 189 NHL regular-season games. He has accumulated three points in 18 career NHL playoff contests.

Prior to joining the Canadiens, Darche had played with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, San Jose Sharks and Tampa Bay Lightning during his NHL career. A native of Montreal, he first signed with the Canadiens as a free agent in 2009.

Leafs sign James Reimer

TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs are ready to run with James Reimer.

The 23-year-old goaltender capped off a dream season by signing a US$5.4-million, three-year contract extension Thursday. Reimer led the team on a surprising second half turnaround after getting called up from the American Hockey League.

"He earned the opportunity to play at the NHL level this past season and he made the most of it with his outstanding play," Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke said in a statement. "He really grabbed the net and never looked back. We are confident that his talent and strong work habits will be contributing factors to our team's success next season."

Reimer scored a big raise after finishing a rookie contract that paid him about $600,000 at the NHL level. He's expected to be the team's No. 1 goaltender next season.

Burke still has a decision to make on veteran goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who had off-season sports hernia surgery and is due to become an unrestricted free agent July 1. Jonas Gustavsson is also under contract for next season.

Reimer wasn't touted as a top prospect by the organization until bursting on the scene in January. With Giguere and Gustavsson each out with injuries, he took over and went on to post a 20-10-5 record in 37 games with a 2.60 goals-against average and .921 save percentage.

That helped earn him a trip to the IIHF World Hockey Championship in Slovakia, where he went unbeaten in four starts for Canada.

It was an improbable run for the man from tiny Morweena, Man., who didn't start playing organized hockey until he was 12 and got drafted by the Leafs 99th overall in 2006. Reimer quickly became a fan favourite in Toronto and had to get used to all the attention.

"It's weird to be walking around the mall and have people recognize you and say, 'Hey, you're James Reimer.' I'm like, 'Yeah, I am. What's the big deal?"' Reimer told The Canadian Press in February. "I try not to get caught up in it, it could be a bad road to go down."

As humble as they come, he also admitted that there was some adjustment when he started receiving NHL paycheques.

"I'm getting the minimum here and it's 10 times more than I got down (in the AHL)," said Reimer. "It's a lot bigger. It's weird. It feels like you don't deserve it sometimes -- what am I doing to deserve this?

"There are many people that work a lot harder than I do who don't get paid half as much."

Key words, "so far"....... give it time :D

Personally, why not go after Brooks Laich instead of Andrei K and Darch.... Laich alone would be an improvement over the lazy russian and a 4th liner in darche, and BINGO, the $ you just paid those 2 could of landed Laich, well, thats IF he would want to come play in Montreal.

Mini is your team, lol...... and its your dream, so believing the lazy ak will be the next great one , well, like i said, its your dream so dream BIG! Dont get me wrong, i LOVE the fact both these guys signed again, great signings! Great job once again by Pierre G! :thumb:
Hey mini Doc, AK 46 is slowly becoming a power forward deluxe, and will probably score 35+ goals next year, while Darche is the perfect all around team player. Brooks Laich on the other hand is an overrated third line player, and a perfect fit for Burkie's team.

Even as a 4th liner Darche is far more important for all the kids in Quebec which are the reasons why Hockey is still a religion out here and not just a big $$$ artificial show like in TO.

Anyway... we know now that your favorite sport is not Hockey but Drafting :)

Ahhhh the old Quebec excuse.... "we must have a french coach", "we must have french players"... HOGWASH! most hockey teams would agree, that you should be going after the best players not get players beacuse of their heritage. Thats why the habs will never win another cup, the game has changed and they are stuck in the old days still.

Carl Gunnarsson signs 2 yr deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs re-signed restricted free agent defenceman Carl Gunnarsson to a two-year contract worth $2.65 million, the club announced on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Gunnarsson played 68 games with the Blue and White last season, collecting four goals and 16 assists with 14 penalty minutes. He ranked third among Leafs defencemen in points and fourth on the team in blocked shots.

In 111 career games with the Leafs, the native of Orebro, Sweden has registered seven goals, 28 assists and 35 points along with 24 penalty minutes and a plus- 6 rating.

Gunnarsson represented Sweden at the 2011 IIHF World Championship. In nine games, he tallied two assists and a plus- 5 rating, while helping Sweden win the silver medal. He has played for Sweden at the last three World Championship tournaments.

Senators name red wing assistant, Paul MacLean, as head coach

OTTAWA -- Paul MacLean left Detroit to take over as coach in Ottawa, but he didn't leave without first taking a piece of the Red Wings with him.

The long-time assistant was introduced as the Senators' new bench boss at a news conference Tuesday and says he plans on introducing a similar philosophy to the one he spent six successful seasons under with Mike Babcock in the Motor City.

"I don't know if we're going to play the Red Wing way, but we're going to play a game that's going to be played with some pace and tempo," MacLean said. "You've got to play 200 feet (of ice), you've got to be able to skate and if you have the puck, you can dictate what's going on."

MacLean takes over from Cory Clouston, who was fired April 9 after the Senators missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. The 53-year-old is the team's ninth head coach since the modern-day franchise debuted in 1992-93.

He'll be the fourth head coach and fifth person to occupy the role since Ottawa reached the Stanley Cup final in 2007 with Murray at the helm. Murray took over the GM chair from John Muckler following that season and promoted assistant John Paddock. He lasted less than a season, with Murray stepping behind the bench to finish the 2007-08 campaign.

Craig Hartsburg followed to start the 2008-09 season, but also didn't last the year, with Clouston replacing him in February 2009. Clouston guided the Senators to a post-season appearance in his first full season in charge the following year. However, the Senators took a step backwards in 2010-11.

"After a poor season, the need for change was obvious," Murray said. "I felt Paul fit the profile (of what the team needed in a coach). He'd been a player, been a head coach, been an assistant coach in the National Hockey League. He's been a winner everywhere he's been. ... I think he brings energy, experience, expertise and people skills, most importantly.

"When you make a change, you want it to be a positive one."

Clouston was criticized throughout his tenure with the Senators for being too hard on his players and too rigid in his systems, prompting rumours that he wasn't well liked by the team's veterans.

The same likely won't be said of MacLean, who scored 324 goals and 673 points in 719 regular-season games in 11 seasons with the St. Louis Blue, Winnipeg Jets and Red Wings.

"I think it's important in the NHL today that the coach and the players communicate," he said. "Communication with the players is important in empowering them and having them invest in what you're trying to do and what you're trying to accomplish. It's not me against them, it's us -- the Ottawa Senators -- against the rest of the league and we have to work together in order to accomplish that goal."

MacLean, who was born in Grostenquin, France, but grew up and still resides in the off-season in Antigonish, N.S., certainly made a positive first impression Tuesday.

He said all of the things Senators fans -- and perhaps the players -- probably would like to hear about how the team will approach the upcoming season.

"I think his experience with what he's been through and especially with the players he's been coaching the last while in Detroit is definitely going to be something that adds a lot to our team," Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson said. "If you look at the way Detroit plays, it's a good team that has a lot of skill, but, at the same time, it's a really good defensive team. They play with the puck as much as they can and I think I can see us doing the same thing.

MacLean, who has yet to name his assistants in Ottawa, was part of a Red Wings team that won five division titles and made two trips to the Stanley Cup final -- winning in 2008 -- while he was there.

He also worked as Babcock's assistant with Murray as GM for two seasons in Anaheim, going to the final with the Ducks in 2003. MacLean was also an NHL assistant in Phoenix and a head coach in the minors with Peoria and Kansas City of the IHL and Quad City of the UHL.

"I believe the National Hockey League is a fast and physical league and the game needs to be played that way," MacLean said. "You have to be able to skate the whole rink, so we're going to skate the rink, play good defence, but we're going to attack the net and make sure we're putting pressure on the opposition.

"The good thing about being with (Babcock) it that I was in on every opportunity that was done or made the Red Wing way or the Babcock way ... so I'm not stealing anything from him, I was part of it, so our system and the way that we play is probably going to be very similar."

In Ottawa, he inherits a team that dealt many of the remaining holdovers from 2007 over the past season to stockpile draft picks and allow players from Binghamton to gain valuable NHL experience.

MacLean still has a core that includes Alfredsson, who says he's making good progress in his recovery after recently undergoing back surgery, star centre Jason Spezza, veteran defenceman Chris Phillips and goaltender Craig Anderson. He's got a good, young offensive blue-liner in Erik Karlsson and another older one coming off a disappointing season in Sergei Gonchar.

Murray interviewed several candidates for the job, including Kurt Kleinendorst, who recently coached the Senators' AHL affiliate in Binghamton to the Calder Cup title.

Senators owner Eugene Melnyk also went public with his desire to see Dave Cameron, coach of the Ontario Hockey League team that Melnyk owns -- the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors -- promoted to the role.

In the end, Murray felt MacLean was the best fit.

"He'd gone through that environment in Detroit, we went to the final in Anaheim and I know he played a big part in that and I knew he was ready to coach," Murray said. "He's got that presence about him of a guy that can take charge."

Great move by Ottawa! Now all they have to do is get rid of Bryan Murray and find a good GM.

I agree, but Burke is currently building another team, and he would not fit under the "good" catagory... Only Great would suffice. :thumb:

Wrong verb tense lg: Burkie is not currently building another team - he HAS done it, and they won the Cup last night! Congratulations to Burkie for his truly great work in building the BRUINS into a championship squad!

And while we're at it, congratulations to Kaberle for winning a Cup in the only possible way: by ESCAPING Toronto!

Jagr to come back to the NHL

Sorry but as usual, you havnt a clue, but i am glad for Kaberle to get a cup, we thank him for Colborne, a first round pick this year and a second round pic next, all for a underacheiving rental player that he was to boston. Now i just wonder who will sign him this summer? Detroit maybe? Boston almost has to sign him to justify the trade but not sure they will.

In other news around the NHL.... Jagr wants to come back. PLEASE sign in Montreal, lol....OLE'......

After three seasons in the KHL, Jaromir Jagr could be ready to return to the National Hockey League.

According to reports on MLive.com and the Detroit Free Press on Thursday, Jagr's agent Petr Svoboda has put out feelers to five NHL teams - the Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens - about the possibility of the future Hall of Famer signing on as a free agent.

Jagr has not played in the NHL since 2007-08, opting to join Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League. He scored 19 goals and 50 points in 49 games last season.

The 39-year-old established himself as one of the NHL's premier talents during the 1990's, winning Stanley Cups with the Penguins in each of his first two seasons and capturing the Hart Trophy in 1999.

The five-time Art Ross Trophy winner has 646 goals and 1,599 points in 17 NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, Washington and the Rangers.

Salary Cap To Rise By 5 Million for 2011/2012 Season

With the National Hockey League Entry Draft less than a week away and the potential for trades escalating this week and next with the free agency period looming, the salary cap will be going up by nearly $5 million next season.

Clubs and agents are being told next year's salary cap will be set at an upper limit of $64 million with a floor of $48 million.

During the 2010-11 season, the salary cap had an upper limit of $59.4 million.

The league's cap - entering its seven season under the current collective bargaining agreement - has risen every year since the end of the NHL lockout when the cap was set at $39-million.

Best Recent News From the World of Hockey

The great Nick Lidstrom will play again next season. This is excellent news for all true fans of hockey.

Furthermore, if justice is served, Lidstrom will pick up three awrds this week: the Norris (as usual), the Lady Byng, and the Mark Messier Leadership Award. These can go on his resumé along with his six (!!!) previous Norris Trophies, his Conn Smythe, his four (!!!) Stanley Cups, etc., etc., etc.

The classiest player in the NHL today, without a doubt. Pavel Datsyuk is a close second and Henrik Zetterberg third. For fourth, you might have to choose a NON- Red Wing, hard as that may be to believe.

Pacioretty re signs

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens are confident Max Pacioretty is on the mend.

The club re-signed the left-winger to a two-year contract extension worth $3.25 million on Monday, just over three months after he suffered a serious concussion and a fractured vertebra on a hit from Boston's Zdeno Chara.

Pacioretty, 22, was taken from the ice on a stretcher March 8 after the Bruins defenceman hit him into a glass stanchion between the benches at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

He missed the rest of the regular season and the playoffs.

"A power forward with skills, Max showed that he can help our team and make a name for himself in the NHL," Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier said in a release. "We are confident that he will have recovered fully from the injury."

Pacioretty had 14 goals and 10 assists in 37 games with Montreal last season before the injury. He also recorded 32 points (17-15) in 27 games with Hamilton of the American Hockey League.

Pacioretty was the 22nd overall pick in the 2007 entry draft.
