Well, from what i saw, it was a clean check with the shoulder and therefore not a penalty. Both referees seem to have had the same opinion as i had. Just because a player has his back turned to the play doesn't mean that he can't be touched.

It's quite obvious that both you guys are biased against the Leafs (and one of you is a Bruins fan on top of that), so it's not surprising that you are both blinded from the truth. Had the teams been reversed, you would have a totally different opinion.

No foul, no penalty.

Guess the league is biased against the Leaf's as well. Phaneuf hearing tomorrow.

...please tell us why the referees wouldn't have called a penalty on Phaneuf if indeed there was a penalty to be called?

Elbow to back of the neck while player is facing the board.
It's easy why the ref didn't call it because he didn't see the angle.

Also you can clearly see that Phaneuf didn't anticipate that Miller was actually loosing his stand and since Phaneuf intended to hit him from behind at shoulder height he himself (Phaneuf) realised he made a mistake by hitting his neck instead. You can clearly see in his eyes that he thinks he will get a penalty and that he is guilty since his intention was to hit from behind.

So yes he should have a penalty (himself knew it).
And no, the referees aren't perfect.

It's very late in the game, and they simply let it go.

Anyone who played real hockey and ref some knows exactly what I'm talking about.

Yet, it didn't make much difference since Leafs couldn't win this one.

Although it was a good no-call by the two referees on that particular play, the NHL will probably suspend Phaneuf for 1-2 games just to save face & get the complainers off its back. I don't have a problem with it. Phaneuf has logged in a lot of ice-time and he's playing with several minor injuries which need time to heal. A 1-2 game suspension is just what the doctor may have recommended.

On a slightly different note, after watching the replay of the goals earlier today, i'm still confused why Jarome Iginla's goal counted & not called goalie interference?

Incorrect.

It was NOT "a good no-call". It CLEARLY should have been called, as all the NON-BIASED posters here said even BEFORE the NHL correctly announced that there would be a hearing. The referees committed HUMAN ERROR, as SK and I correctly pointed out BEFORE the NHL's announcement. There is no place in hockey for this sort of dangerous behavior that Phaneuf exhibited - behavior which would be criminal if it occurred on the street.

The only point I agree with you on is that Phaneuf will probably get off easy with only 2 games.

Correct.

If that was a penalty on Cap'n Canada, then where was the call on Seidenberg for his hit on Mason Raymond earlier in the game? Another non-call....I have to agree with Techman, the ref's have been brutal so far this season.

Like Doc said, Dion will get 1-2 games for reasons listed below.

And if anything, it will be bonus for his team to NOT have him in the lineup. They may even win more than 1 in a row.

Actually, Phaneuf has played great under Carlyle's tutorship and he's by far Toronto's best defenceman. There's currently a huge gap between him and #2.

Phaneuf deserves consideration for Team Canada at the Olympics.

And who's to say that you guys thinking a penalty should have been called is not HUMAN ERROR on your part?

By the way, my buddy SK is a Bruins fan, so it's quite obvious why he'd have a bias view of the play. If i were a Bruins fan myself, i'd probably think it was a penalty also. It's normal. But both referees didn't feel it was a penalty, and neither did i. I'll admit that initially i thought a penalty should have been called, but upon further review, i realized why the referees didn't blow the whistle.

But again, just to save face, Shanahan will likely suspend Phaneuf 1 or 2 games, and also to get his detractors off his back.

In Shanahan's days, such a hit would have warranted a pat on the back from his coach and teammates. There was a time not that long ago that players were told to protect themselves and not expect not to be hit even if their backs were to the play, which is why possibly there weren't as many injuries or similar plays back in those days.

What Miller did is often seen in junior hockey where players turn their backs to the play in the last seconds hoping to get hit from behind in order to draw a penalty.

Welcome to the NHL, Mr. Miller. Now you've paid a small price for your foolishness and a penalty wasn't even called. Silly you!

As i predicted, the league handed Phaneuf a 2-game suspension, without a doubt to save face & calm Sheriff Shanny's detractors.

Phaneuf will welcome the 2-game ban in order to rest and give his body time to heal some of his nagging injuries.

We should find out Shaun Thornton's suspension on Friday. My guess is that since he's never been suspended in the past & is very well-respected among his peers for the role that he plays (successfully, i may add), he will likely get only 8-10 games, probably 10.

Had it been John Scott, whom no one respects & has been suspended in the past, Scott would have got possibly 25-30 games, if not more.

Definitely not enough. That was disgusting. He should be throwed out for the rest of the season (but that wont happen). There is no excuse for what he did and how he did it. How can other players defend him ? Are they afraid of the union or what ?
Why wait until somenoe gets killed before putting an end to this kind of Madness. The knee in the face of Marchand by a Pittsburgh player was also disgusting (only 5 games suspension ?. WTF !)

Well, in addition to any unbiased fan who knows his hockey, there's a guy named Brendan Shanahan who agrees with SK and me...which is EXACTLY WHY Phaneuf got the EXACT suspension that I predicted.(YOUR prediction was "1 or 2").

BTW, Shanny also pointed out that right before Phaneuf's dangerous and illegal action, Clarkson slashed the poor kid. Not exactly admirable or courageous actions by these two highly-paid Leafs. Bravo to Shanny for clamping down on this unacceptable behavior!

So how is this not true for you as a Leafs fan? You guys have quite a record for kool-aid drinking delusionalism. Burke the genius...Kessel superstar.

As for what the refs saw at regular game speed, Shanahan obviously had the opportunity to view the replay as much and as carefully as he wanted. You saying the choice after careful observation was just to save face is only another fan biased comment to make yourself feel good. If anyone can look at the video at 52 seconds seeing Miller's head hit the rail and not see it was excessive then they should try having a buddy hit them from behind unexpectedly putting their own head into a rail and see if it feels excessive.

What Miller did is often seen in junior hockey where players turn their backs to the play in the last seconds hoping to get hit from behind in order to draw a penalty. Silly you!

There's bias. We all know you'd say the same thing if the uniforms were switched, huh Doc. Silly you.

Regarding Marchand getting up eventually and staying in the game, that does not indicate much about the seriousness of the injury except he wasn't unconscious. Many professional sports players take very serious damaging hit to the head. Because they are so mentally programmed to be tough guys, as hockey players traditionally see their image and duty, they often get up and keep playing despite real damage. Neal bent down to add force purposely and directed his knee at a helpless Marchand's head. The 5-game suspension for this kind of planned assault on someone's head is a bare token considering what was done to a player down and unable to defend himself.

But then of course the Leafs have a habit of running when confronted by opponents ready to face them. So I guess we'll call an attack on a helpless downed player..."MAPLE LEAFING". :thumb:

Thornton's outrageous choice was indeed an egregious offense. I would not consider it excessive to go over 10 games for a suspension, maybe 20-25. His record may be good, and he may have had a lot of respect previously, but the action was a terrible example of breaking prohibitions, not to mention the indefensible violence of it.

Not exactly admirable or courageous actions by these two highly-paid Leafs. Bravo to Shanny for clamping down on this unacceptable behavior!

Let's see...they run away...they swings sticks...take illegal shots from behind...target head shots on downed players...then their fans defend the cowardice and cheap offenses. MAPLE LEAFING! Nope, nothing admirable or courageous.

Decided to take a look at the Rangers/Columbus game for some of the first periode tonight and the 8.5 Million Dollar Man (cap hit per year on his new deal, with a salary next season of 11million) King Henrik was chased after 3 goals on just 13 shots in 11 minutes on the ice.... He will be 32 in March and close to 40 when the deal expires. Not so sure Glen Sather gave out a very good contract here, then again for Sather, i suppose Henrik could have got a cap hit of 10 mil per season over the life of the deal. Goalies age (and with age come injuries) in different ways but for Ranger fans, i hope he takes the path of Marty Brodeur and not a Rick DiPietro for example.

He is however a top 5 goailie in the NHL right now, just not tonight.

Toronto Maple Leafs look ‘brain dead, coach says, in loss to St. Louis Blues

http://sports.nationalpost.com/2013...t-to-an-early-exit-in-loss-to-st-louis-blues/

Our hockey club looked like we were brain dead in a lot of areas. “We just weren’t our sharpest tonight, including me,” Reimer said. “Didn’t have much life, not quite sure about the reason.”

Schwartz and Roy scored 3:11 apart to push the lead to 3-0.

Schwartz, who assisted on goals by Roy and Stewart, has 12 points in 11 games. He is plus-10 in his last 10.

We just weren’t our sharpest tonight, including me. Didn’t have much life, not quite sure about the reason. “I really like the way we played in the first period,” Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. “We created turnovers and got them standing still. We gave them tired legs early.”

Toronto hasn’t won in regulation in 12 games. The Maple Leafs were coming off a 3-1 loss at home to Los Angeles on Wednesday.

“Our hockey club looked like we were brain dead in a lot of areas,” Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said. “I don’t know any other way to describe it. Our concern has been high for a while now.”

So our Toronto fans loved chirping about how the Red Wings were having so much trouble in overtime, but the Maple Leafs can't seem to play hockey and win in regulation for a dozen games now, and their best hits only come when the other players are already down and fighting to stay conscious.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the Bruins are on the ice again with Neal.

Meanwhile the Boston Bruins just keep rolling and rolling despite the injuries, including cowardly maple leafing hits.

Chad Johnson stops 39 shots as Bruins beat Oilers

http://bostonherald.com/sports/brui..._johnson_stops_39_shots_as_bruins_beat_oilers

EDMONTON, Alberta — The Bruins knew how dangerous the talented young Oilers could be, and it certainly showed last night. Fortunately for the B’s, they built a big enough cushion early — and received stellar 39-save goaltending from Chad Johnson — to slip away with a 4-2 victory.

The Bruins have had a nasty habit of playing well for only a portion of games, yet finding ways to win — often with late, third-period fireworks.

Last night, they had their fireworks early against the still-have-a-lot-to-learn Oilers. The B’s dominated early, taking a 3-0 lead in the first period, but the Oilers stormed back to nearly steal the game. The B’s held on with Jarome Iginla netting his second goal of the game into an empty net with 43.4 seconds left.

“They showed their skill level and gave us a really tough game,” said Bruins coach Claude Julien, his team 3-0-0 on this Canadian trip. “At the end, we were just hanging on. We’re struggling with the health of our team and it was a matter of either win it in regulation, or I don’t think we come out of here with a win.”

Johnson had maybe his best game as a Bruin. He was backed quickly by a nice offensive cushion via goals by Dennis Seidenberg (No. 1), Iginla (7) and Brad Marchand (5). But if he thought he was in for an easy night, he was dreaming.

“Johnson was good, especially in the third period,” Julien said. “He’s the reason he kept us in there. There was lot of traffic in front of him, but he battled and gave us the opportunity to win this game.”

Cheers,

Merlot
