McSorley's actions were a bit more blatant, he swung his hockey stick like a baseball bat against Brashear's head:

Thornton's actions were of a milder nature. I think that Orpik got the worst of it when he was unexpectedly pulled to the ice. It is actually more reminiscent of George Parros getting pulled down by Colton Orr:

Hitting the guy's head while lying on the ice is pure disgrace.
If I was Orpik (once coming back from the hospital) I would settle this outside the ice rink.

Boston lost 3 players last night: Thornton, Eriksson & Kelly.
The Thornton incident alone must have been demoralizing for the team on their flight to Toronto, on top of losing at home against the Penguins. The timing couldn't have been better for the Leafs, who were sky-high on their way back home after winning in Ottawa last night.

It has nothing to do with intelligence. Any team playing the Panthers (even the Buffalo Sabres) is expected to win.
I do agree with you that Jimmy Howard sucks. He'd be nothing but a backup goalie on most teams. The 'Monster' is okay, but there are at least 30 goalies in the league better than him. I'm still surprised so see Detroit playing as well as it is with no 'true' starting goalie in the lineup.....similar to Philly, but Mason has surprised everyone and been very decent.
In other news, Vinnie Lecavalier's back problems appear to be long-term. Possibly a disc issue and this isn't good news for Philly who plays much better with Lecavalier in the lineup.
Yes, just as any team playing the last-place Buffalo Sabres is expected to win, although I can think of at least one team that has lost 2 of the 3 games it played against the Sabres. In fact, that team was destroyed (6-0) in one of its two losses.

If the officials had done their job properly, nothing would have happened last night. First off, Crosby should have gotten a tripping penalty which would have ended it there. But because he's precious Sidney, he didn't. So if they let the trip go, then Neal should have been given a 5 minute match penalty for deliberate attempt to injure Marchand. I don't give a shit about how Marchand plays, a knee to the head is a knee to the head. The officiating was bad last year and it hasn't improved at all this year. If anything, it's getting worse. There's no real excuse for Thornton other than he just lost it. But the league has to get the officiating in line or expect more of this to happen down the line. Neal will get a slap on the wrist, maybe 4 games for his chicken shit move and I predict Thornton to get between 10 and 15.
And the league should get rid of the bullshit instigator penalty. If players like Orpik want to go headhunting, then let them have to defend themselves afterwards without the protection of the instigator rule.

I agree with techman, although i'm surprised to hear this from a habs fan, considering how one-sided the refereeing has been in their favor when they play at the Bell Centre.
I've been to four games at the Bell Center so far this year and seen all the others on the tube and saying that the Habs get preferential treatment from the officials is pure bullshit. The officiating has been crappy across the board for a few years now. I think it's all fallout from the attempt to make NHL stand for No Hitting League.
I remember back in the '70s when we first started playing against teams from Europe, where there was no fighting allowed, how there were non stop complaints about the dirty tactics like slew footing, kneeing, slashing and other dirty stick work, elbows, and on and on...but there was no fighting! This is what is happening now to the NHL. In the quest to eliminate fighting, the other dirty shit is taking over the game because there is no price to pay for it. If they ever do find a way to totally eliminate fighting from the game, it will be the end of hockey as I know and love it. With shootouts and two blind refs on the ice who can't do what one used to manage, they don't have far to go.
Agreed 100% on this entire post. The only thing I'm still trying to grasp is how Orpik got so injured by a couple of what looked to be very light, short punches. From the replays I saw he didn't seem to hit his head on the ice when he was pulled by Thornton so I can only guess he sustained his "injuries" on the two minor taps he received. Haven't heard what his diagnosis is yet but I'll be interested to find out.
And can someone tell me how THIS isn't a penalty or suspension on Phaneuf? WTF!!

Well, from what i saw, it was a clean check with the shoulder and therefore not a penalty. Both referees seem to have had the same opinion as i had. Just because a player has his back turned to the play doesn't mean that he can't be touched.
It's quite obvious that both you guys are biased against the Leafs (and one of you is a Bruins fan on top of that), so it's not surprising that you are both blinded from the truth. Had the teams been reversed, you would have a totally different opinion.

That's where you're 100% incorrect Doc. Had it been a Bruin on Leaf I would say the exact same thing. That's the difference between a true hockey fan and most Leaf fans here.
