OK we need to settle this so Carla can work.

It is a pagaie and it is a canoë. If you practice the sport you know that. I also just checked the terms on the french web site of the Canadian Federation and these are the terms thay use.

You can use 's'est renversé' or 'se renversa'

good luck

pagaie is pronounced with a hard G like gang and 'aie. is pronounced like est (be) like in 'il est. Or as in guêpe.

Also what about my other phrase,

She yelled out every French swearing she knew.

The only person who replied is steak (not very French!! :p ). If he was fillet mignon..

Spoken language

I agree with Bob that canoë and pagaie are good but they are more for formal written language. Quebecers will say canot and aviron. I also agree that the tool depends on the type of boat. If your boat looks like the one on the first picture here:

http://images.google.com/images?svn...,GGLD:2004-29,GGLD:en&q=canot&btnG=Rechercher

or like on the old Canadian dollar coin, it is definitively a canot and you use an aviron.

Steak was right actually.

By the way old_beginner, in the Eastern townships we talk about canoë and pagaie. Also the term my kids leaned when they were in camp.

How would you call the camping luggage we had with us on the canoe?

Hi Carla,

I see that you're not anymore tired like last Saturday ;)

What you are seeking should sound more like this:
Après avoir échappé ma pagaie dans l'eau, j'ai tenté de la recupérer et c'est à ce moment-là que mon canot s'est renversé.

As for the words "pagaie, rames, aviron"

rames and aviron are almost the same and are used when you have a fixed support to hold them.

As for pagaie, it is used when you have no support to hold it.

But it is not that false to use rame since most people doesn't know the difference between those words.

You can look at your PM if you need more help ;)

Hi Bob,

I'm not surprised but to me canoë sounds more formal or official than canot. On the Radio-Canada site, I found canoë and pagaie but chehttp://www.regions.cadets.ca/est/seacad/doc/canot_terminologie.pdfck there:
http://www.regions.cadets.ca/est/seacad/doc/canot_terminologie.pdf

That's the term "ordinary" people will use.

I don't disagree with you but pagaie and canoë are quite commonly used and given that it is a french class she should use the correct term. IMHO

I think my canoe had support.. so I'll use rame as it seems to be easy to pronounce.

Gorsky, I was even more tired yesterday but now I'm back in shape!

Another question, instead of saying my canoe I want to say our canoe.

Thanks!

Is there another word for our? Like you can say 'nous' or 'on'..

Also what's the camping luggage that was in the canoe?

Can you say 'Moi and mon compagnon sont tombes dans le lac avec toutes nos bagages'.. I used Dictionary.com so it can't be right!

Our could also be nos but in our case it is notre like in "notre canoe"

As for your sentence, you should say the following:
Mon compagnon et moi sommes tombés dans le lac avec tout nos bagages
or
Mon compagnon et moi sommes tombés dans le lac avec tout notre équipement

To show respect since you like to show respect, you need to always put others before you :)
