I am pretty sure that the All Star team got a great addition and I am hopeful we will see Swisher come off the bench to pinch hit against a nasty righthander late in a tie game. Then you knuckleheads will realize the importance of having a guy like this on the team. We are trying to win the game - it means home field advantage in the World Series. It is not shits and giggles like everyone hear seems to think. It's a real game and a game that Swish will play to win.
You know, Beav, you've said a lot of stupid shit in this thread, but there are some gentlemen in Stockholm now debating whether or not to give you a Nobel Prize for this week's bullshit. There are, as we speak, five legitimate candidates* for first half MVP, none of whom play right field for the Yankees, one of whom plays first base for the Sox. Anybody who thinks that Nick Swisher deserves to be in the All Star Game over Kevin Youkilis is either a fucking moron®, is seeing the world distorted by pinstriped glasses, or both.

The final voting chose a pretty good player over a three-time MVP candidate (3rd 2008, 6th 2009, top 5 2010.) A poor choice. Nick Swisher, by the way, has never finished in the top 10, likely never will. His "All-Star" father, by the way and which you forgot to mention, hit .236 with 5 HRs in his All Star season of 1976, making him one of the worst AS selections of all time.

*Youkilis, Morneau, Cabrera, Cano, Hamilton, though, if nothing changes, Cabrera wins in a walk. Cano will get one vote and one only, and that he'll only get if Joe.T is admitted to the BBWAA with full voting privileges.

from Pete Abe:
If on Opening Day I said the following would be true at the All-Star break ...

* Josh Beckett would have one win.

* Jacoby Ellsbury would play nine games.

* Mike Cameron would have three home runs and 14 RBIs.

* Dustin Pedroia would hit .213 in May then go on the disabled list on June 26.

* David Ortiz would have one home run in April.

* Guys named Darnell McDonald and Daniel Nava would become regulars.

* Bill Hall would be in the top nine in plate appearances on the team

* Every reliever outside of Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon on the Opening Day roster would have ERAs over 4.59.

* Tim Wakefield would have the third-most innings pitched on the staff.

... would you have said the Red Sox would be 14 games over .500 and within three games of a playoff berth?

Probably not.

If Terry Francona is not the manager of the year so far, who is? And there's a lot of credit due Theo Epstein and his staff for finding the spare parts to plug in and keep the team running.

Speaking of classless...Only a jag-off would post that an injury is good news.
I'm a baseball fan. When the White Sox won the World Series in 2005 after knocking the Red Sox out of the playoffs, I was delighted for them. When the Red Sox came back and eliminated the Indians in 2007, I took it with clearly mixed emotions. It's been along time for the Tribe and, while I couldn't root for the Sox to lose, I certainly felt bad for a talented young team with a short window for success.

The Beav and The Ignarant are not baseball fans. They are Yankee fans. One wants to see his player selected to the All Star team at the expense of a MUCH better player, an MVP candidate, something Swisher will never be. The Ignarant is happy to see players on opposing teams injured, possibly because that's the only way the Yankees can win.

Sadly, The Beav and The Ignarant are typical of Yankee fans worldwide. They're entitled and fuck the rest. Congrats to the Rangers for pwing the spendthrift Brian Cashdollar."

I wanted to insert the words "'nough said" in a pic so I searched for "'nough said pic" and came up with this...

Hmmm... IDK why? Who cares...lol. But at least I've kept short attention spans engauged...lol

Back to baseball...

Soooo...maybe if I asked the question I asked before whenst I was trying to elicit baseball conversation...but in easier terms, say Yankee terms...perhaps we get some educated answers? Well - heres hoping...
her-fingers-crossed.jpg

WHAT IF...
* CC Sabathia would have one win.

* Brett Gardner would play nine games.

* Curtis Granderson (or the great Nick Swisher) would have three home runs and 14 RBIs.

* Robinson Cano don't ya know would hit .213 in May then go on the disabled list on June 26.

* Nick Johnson would have one home run in April. LOL...err - nevermind...

* Guys named ??? and ??? would become regulars. ??? = insert Yankee prospect here

* Ramiro Pena would be in the top nine in plate appearances on the team

* Every reliever outside of ??? and Mariano Rivera on the Opening Day roster would have ERAs over 4.59.

* Javier Vazquez would have the third-most innings pitched on the staff.

... would you have said the Yankees would be ANY games over .500 and within three games of a playoff berth?

Hmmm....what do you think boys??? Would Girardi be up for manager of the year then...or would the posters here and the NY papers be calling for his head?!?

Have fun,

Jman

4 dingers. Nick Swisher was an embarrassment to the American League tonight in the HR Derby. Youkilis would have hit twice that.

Ahhh...BUT...did he hit them from the LEFT side or from the RIGHT side...
'Cause I heard somewhere that he is a switch hitter.

Man...I have the #2 guy Corey Hart on my FBB team and the Sox need Ortiz to stay strong...I sure home this doesn't screw up their swings...
I also heard somewhere that the Red Sox would be releasing Ortiz before the AllStar break..It was from a very reliable source  and accurate predictor...so whats he in the derby as an Indy?!
What No 3, 4 hitters from NYY?!

Girardi names Price AL starter...

Yet another stellar prediction...where's Andy?
I can't wait to hear all of the"valid" reasons he didn't get picked.
Oh yeah, thats right he's only there because Buchholz is hurt...

While red sox village gets their baseball encyclopedias out at the ole ballpark, to look up more useless stats, and are applauding a meaningless HR Derby "victory" (i guess when you have only won 2 WS Championships in the last 90 plus years, you feel good about any kind of victory) lol, real fans like myself ,Beav, and Joet, and heck, even Doc would be in on this one, would be more interested in something like this!

Hey ! Steinbrenner dead ?

He died of a massive heart attack this morning. He was 80. He was also in very poor health over the past couple of years. I loved his cameos on 'Seinfeld'.

George Steinbrenner changed the game of baseball. Love him or hate him, he deserves to be in the HOF & it's unfortunate he was inducted while he was still alive.

Love or Hate? he was only hated by others that would of LOVED to have had him as their teams owner, he was a great owner, actually probably the best owner ever in all of sports, and those who were close to him have always said he was a kind, warm hearted and gentle man..... he will be missed. RIP Mr. Steinbrenner

I never liked George Steinbrenner. If i was a Yankee fan, i probably would say the opposite. But one thing about him that i give him credit for is that he wanted to win at all costs, no matter how much it would cost. Today, we live in a world where many sports franchises are owned by corporations. Most of these corporations have boards of directors whose priority is to look at the bottom line: profits. Many of those folks don't give a damn about baseball, hockey, basketball, etc. They'd rather look at graphics & charts instead of watching a game their team is involved in.

As a fan of such a team, the Jays, i envy the fans of such teams as Boston & NY with their John Henrys & Steinbrenners overseeing operations. These owners have the passion required to win championships. The only bottom line that they care about is winning. Period.

Meanwhile in Toronto, the team has a maximum budget that it will spend on players. As long as the billion-dollar 'Rogers' empire makes huge profits, they don't care if the team wins or not. As long as the fans keep tuning it to their games on the Rogers-owned network, they simply don't care. Same thing with the Maple Leafs & the Raptors, owned my MLSE, a subsiduary of the Ontario Teachers Pension Fund. The games are sold out, they also own their own stations (Leafs TV & Raptors TV), they get huge amounts of money for the broadcasting rights and the Leafs games have been sold-out since 1962. So why spend more money?

George Steinbrenner as a trail blazer in how to make winners out of sports franchises & for this, i'll always respect him. But single owner or family-owned sports franchises are a dying breed. However, many of the most successful teams today are owned by these same types of individuals: Mark Cuban, Jerry Buss, Jerry Jones, etc. Of course, you'll always have Al Davis, Ralph Wilson & Michael Jordan to disprove that theory. However, most often than not, dynasties in sports will rarely be owned by corporations.

People in Montreal, i do envy you for this......your team (Montreal Canadiens) is owned by an ownership group with passion for winning. In the last few years, from George Gillette to the two Molson brothers, there's been a constant. The team is owned by people that love hockey. They're not owned by a pension fund. Just take the Expos. They used to be operated very well when Charles Bronfman owned the team. In their final years, the team was owned by a group of corporations (Jean Coutu among them) and individual millionaires. It had become a Mickey Mouse organization and look where it got them: Washington DC.

Love him or hate him, George Steinbrenner will be missed.

It's amazing how blinded by pinstriped glasses you really are. I'm not going to get into specifics but I will say I've been watching alot of what's been happening today surrounding his demise and there aren't many ex players weeping for him, that's for sure!!

Hello all,

While red sox village gets their baseball encyclopedias out at the ole ballpark, to look up more useless stats, and are applauding a meaningless HR Derby "victory"

This is the marker that proves to everyone the poster is the real Iggy. Pure 100% BS! If a Yankee had won the home run derby Iggy and EB, as well as the MIA Joe.t, would be extolling him like a god. Let me say this Iggy, you're right. It is mostly meaningless and I mean it. That from a die hard Red Sox fan about one of the most beloved Red Sox players of all time. It's bragging rights and nothing else. It's a perfectly logical profit making business show for the entertainment of the fans...but it's meaningless otherwise. Still, though what you state is absolutely correct in my view...you're a total hypocrite because there is no way in the world you and your cohorts wouldn't be worshiping the winner if he had been a Yankee.

That's what amuses me about you and your pals. You're so pinstripe addicted you can't be openly honest because it would kill you to admit anything making a Yankee less than a Red Sox. EB's sophistic defense of Rodriguez and Swisher, by changing the foundation of principles to justify their presence on the All-Star team regardless of the gross inconsistencies proves my point. I just hope that deep down you aren't lying to yourself...whether it is all just one of your taunting games or not.

Cheers,

Merlot

You are absolutely right Merlot...it is meaningless...and who cares. I agree too. I mean it. Read my post about the All Star game from last week.

Last week a .250 lifetime hitter who is playing with a 47 card deck got elected to the All Star game by means of begging for votes and A F#$KING Shrine was erected in his honor. That same guy who got the shrine erected to him hit an embarrassing 4 dingers last night as the representative for the NYY. By the way the memberette who elected the shrine to Nicholis Thomas Swisher is busy getting the engraving re-done
'Nough said...

I posted Mr. David Ortiz' results here not to brag, yuk it up or celebrate. I did it merely as a mention so that some noticeably absent morons and some morons we wish were noticeably absent would get the hint that they don't have a clue.
I know...dream on...

Stats are meaningless only to those who have no comprehension of what they are and those who know nothing about baseball. Let me ask you this yankee fans - if stats are so meaningless then why do keep bringing up 27...?
It's just a useless statistic.

Out of respect for the dead, I will say nothing relative to the passing of Steinbrenner...but only out of respect for the dead. Besides, my comments are on record earlier in the thread as to the way he treated others and I am sure Lucifer is happy to see him tonight. I will say this - its really easy to respect someone and think he's great when you have your hand in his pocket.

Enough said,

Jman

George M. Steinbrenner Spring Training 1974

Cost of New York Yankees when purchased by Steinbrenner in 1973 - $8.7 million
Cost of Yankees today - $1 billion (estimate by Forbes Magazine)
