Nice Christmas Present you just gave ghg, Doc., the gift of Truth.

SOME truth, yes...and a lot of NON-truth, as my preceding posts have proven by using FACTS. Consider it MY Christmas gift to you and the good Doctor. No need to thank me: I enjoy teaching people about hockey.

Well, as they say, Christmas is a time for sharing. So i figured i'd share some of my hockey knowledge with those who considerably need some in order to hopefully make them appear smarter when they'll post in 2014. What can say? I'm a very nice guy! :thumb:

My sentiments exactly! I hope you enjoyed the sharing that I did in the preceding posts.

Clarkson has not put up the numbers yet, even tho he has the last few games, but the intangibles he birngs are there every night and remember he missed ten games out of the gate to start the season and that is tough to jump right into things after missing that kind of time when everyone else has been playing. He will be fine and has been playing extremely well the last 5 games and looks to be back on track.

Clarkson does not rate to EVER "put up the numbers." His best season by far was 2 years ago when, in a complete 82 game season (of which he played 80) he registered career highs in goals (30), assists (16), and points (46). He is not, and never has been, even close to an elite point producer.

His career totals are 453 games played, 100 goals , 78 assists, for a total of 178 points. He has 815 penalty minutes and - despite playing for New Jersey until this season - is a minus 36.

This season the Leafs have played 39 games but due to his 2 suspensions Clarkson has played only 27. He has 3 goals and 5 assists for 8 points. If he continues at that rate and plays ALL the remaining games, he is on target to finish this season with approximately 8 goals and 13 assists for a total of 21 points. So far he has 45 penalty minutes and is a minus 4. He has won only 20% of the faceoffs he has taken.

Clarkson has already been suspended twice this season for flagrant rule violations - once for 10 games, once for 2. Needless to say, his lack of discipline and the resulting well-deserved suspensions obviously did not help his team.

A hockey player is usually in his prime during his late 20s. Clarkson will turn 30 in March 2014 - a mere 3 months from now. After this season he will STILL have another 6 YEARS remaining on his contract (taking him to age 36), since Dave Nonis signed him for SEVEN YEARS and $36.75 MILLION!

Well, well, well. The laughing-stock team, the leafs, are close to signing, now hold onto your seats, Dion Enough, to a

seven and I repeat, seven year contract, worth 49 million dollars.

Lets see, 46 years without a Stanley Cup. Well, lets cut to the chase, lets say we write this year, which will make it 47.

That will then make it 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, and 54 years of NO STANLEY CUP. You have made it so, by signing him AND having him as the captain of your team.

What a joke of a franchise.

Where I belong.
You're quite correct, Doctor. In fact, this frequent occurrence is the main reason that Detroit is currently tied with Toronto.
You ever hear the old line, "A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work." I suppose it could be transposed, "The Red Wings worst season is the equivalent of the Maple Leafs best." (It being New Year's Eve, JC, you might be kind enough to define "equivalent" and "transposed" for the little round toad.)

Congrats to Captain Canada, Dion Phaneuf on his 7 yr extension. He left money on the table as he surely would have got close to 8mil (possible more) per yr for max term next summer, especially since the cap is going way up. A top 15 dman in the entire NHL, plays big minutes, always plays versus the other teams top guys, first unit special teams, cares about the community (Phaneufs Friends) well liked by teammates, has to deal with the Toronto media and a hockey mad market and oh yea, has a hot celebrity wife. People love to hate a guy with everything and now the haters have more reasons. Somehow, i dont think Dion will mind as he to has his own reasons, 49 million strong. Great signing for less money than he could have had July 1, 2014. Nice to have guys wanting to come and stay in Toronto once again.

. Great signing

terrible signing - like Brian Campbell deal

bad pinches

repeatedly getting beaten wide

lost battles in front of the net

not a leader : ZERO playoff rounds won as captain

like Clarkson, contract will be an anchor for many seasons

voted most over rated player in the league by his peers

past his prime and on the decline - not a difference maker

will never win a Norris

liability in his own end

horrible shot differential

1 round playoff stats as Toronto captain: 15 giveaways, only 1 takeaway, 3 measly points and a lousy -6 rating in 7 game epic choke and fail

It was a great game!!! It definitely was the best "Winter Classic" game that i've seen so far!! Boring first period, but the game picked up after this and turned out to be very exciting, even though the snowfall was a factor. But it was fair for both teams. I don't get ending play at exactly the halfway point of a period even while play is going on, but both teams were aware of the rules.

Look who's talking!!!!

What do you think of the Daniel Briere signing? What about Rene Bourque & Brian Gionta's contract?? David Desharnais? What about paying Brandon Prust that kind of money for an oft-injured 4th liner??

What about likely handing over $72-80 million to P.K. Subban if the the habs want to keep him??? They'll probably have to overpay Markov also if they want to keep him!

What a joke!!!!!

It had its moments but I don't think it was "a great game". In fact, you yourself give the lie to that statement when you say "boring first period". A game can hardly be called "great" when at least one third of it is boring.

You are definitely correct in pointing out a MAJOR flaw, namely "ending play at exactly the halfway point of a period even while play is going on". Henrik might agree.

You are also correct in saying "the snowfall was a factor". As Mike Babcock said in agreeing with your point, "Conditions made it so that some of the skill of the game was eliminated."

These games are fun and good for visibility, but they are obviously very different from regular NHL games.

In both cases you are only speculating, whereas the Phaneuf error has already been made.

Even if your speculations do, in fact, turn out to come true (more likely in Subban's case than Markov's), there is no comparison between a young player like Subban who already has a Norris Trophy to his credit and an older guy like Phaneuf who is not far from the downside of his career and whose best days occurred way back at the start of his tenure in Calgary. In those days he was regarded as a player with a fine future, but sadly the expectations did not pan out, as GHG has so thoroughly documented. Sincere congratulations to Dion for getting all that money from Nonis!
