It's pretty much window dressing, and hobbyist doesn't really mean anything special or interesting in and of itself. It's just one of the many words that men use instead of calling themselves "johns". Using pooner or monger is the same thing. Monger is generally a more used term elsewhere and people in Montreal seem to prefer to use "hobbyist" and "hobby". It's to avoid using "john" which has negative connotations to men who pay for sex, even though it means the same thing. The same is true for men here normally using the word SP instead of using other words with more negative associations. It's just a form of politenesss within the community. Internationally some men and women like to use terms that to indicate they're not full time either partakers or sellers (jinetera for women in Cuba is an example) which to me just seems like rationalizing, but again it's just social lubricant. I personally don't like either "hobbyist" or "hobby" and tend to use "monger" instead, but that's more just habit and personal preference than anything else. I do use hobby and hobbyist here occasionally just because it's the locally accepted term. That is really an interesting topic.
What is a hobbyist and who thinks of themselves as a hobbyists.
I personally don’t even like the name and certainly don’t consider myself that and hope the ladies I see don’t either.
To me a hobbyist is someone who sees as many women as possible and most often for an hour or less.
A guy who is more interested on being able to put as many notches on his revolver as possible and finds gratification and to be able to boast about how many women he has slept with. I never really understood the attraction or the need for this.
While I probably spent more time with an SP than most, this year I have seen basically 2 women the whole year and one in a duo once with one of the 2.
I like and care about the women I am seeing and we are friends not just SP/client I have known them for years and consider myself lucky to have such caring and kind women in my life who are total sweethearts and so nice to spend time with.
why is john more derogatory than hobbyist lolIt's pretty much window dressing, and hobbyist doesn't really mean anything special or interesting in and of itself. John is just a word, but it has negative associations, much like the ladies here would generally rather be called an SP rather than a hooker, because using the latter term is considered to be rude. It's a more socially acceptable term within the community. Yes, using client is fine, but it is what the SPs might refer to the men as, not what the men use to refer to themselves typically. Men describe themselves as "hobbyists" (or mongers, pooners, brothers, whatever) but not as "johns" because of the negativity associated with the term. It's all just social lubricant.why is john more derogatory than hobbyist lol
just say client
Hobbyist makes me think of this so no i don't use that word, i also try to avoid acronyms if i can
I could care less either way, but by definition it makes sense for someone that does it on the reg.
Hobby
1.
an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure.
"her hobbies are reading and gardening"
It reminds me of the It's Always Sunny line from Frank "One of the things I like most, is banging whores."Then wouldn't this also apply to masturbation? "My hobby is masturbating" has a weird ring (lol) to it doesn't it?
"My hobby is eating snacks"
"My hobby is taking baths"
"My hobby is visiting my parents on the weekend"
Idk I just think there's a difference between a hobby and an activity you simply enjoy doing. Not everything is a hobby just because it's fun to do imo. If it's tied to basic needs (like food, sex, hygiene, personal relationships) I wouldn't call it a hobby, but that's just me. I don't have a monopoly on language.
that guy looks cool af, i'm glad he's interested in somethingHobbyist makes me think of this so no i don't use that word, i also try to avoid acronyms if i can

I don't care whatever anyone does to feel better about themselves, as long as they have good hygiene.SPs. Do you like to see facial makeup in your male clients ?
