It shows tremendous loyalty by Lundqvist, but I happened to be in New York City a few weeks ago for the Giants-Packers game and after that game went to a Manhattan bar and saw the Rangers lose 1-0 to the Kings. After that game Lundqvist was extremely upset and was seen whacking his stick against every inanimate object he could hit on his way to the lockerroom. It has to be frustrating to tend goal for a team that cannot score goals.

TVA Sports reported that P.K. Subban is reportedly seeking between $65-70 million for 8 years from the Habs.

If this is true and i'm Bergevin, i'm signing that contract right away!

If P.K. would be wise, he'd waiit and sign for one year, or go to arbitration. And next season, hit the jackpot since i'm certain there are many teams out there such as the Flyers and the Leafs which would pay him $10 million per for 8 years.

The wealthier teams won't mind dishing out big $$ to get the players they want since some claim the salary cap might go up to $90 million next season due to the recent massive deal struck between the NHL and Rogers Communications.

Subban should be given that money. He is a super player, plus he is nasty. Did anyone see the blind elbow he landed on Ovechkin's jaw last Friday night? When your blind elbow can hammer someone backward like that, I really think that is worth something. Because now the superstars of the NHL know that they cannot camp out near Price's net. If they do, there will be a severe punishment. Ovechkin and Crosby both found this out recently. The hard way.

This guy will cheap shot anybody, but has been challenged many times to drop the gloves in a fair fight

He never will

A wonderful day in Ranger land for arguably, the best goalie in the world over the last several seasons :

Class act, and I'm sure the other teams are very disappointed he's not going to sign with them next year

Great goalie, generally a good signing except for the fact that it's for 7 years. It would have been better to sign him for say 4 years at the same 8 1/2 million per year. It's like the bad contracts that the Leafs did with Clarkson and Kessel among others (Kovalchuk with the Devils, for starters). The father of all these rich long-term contracts (at least the father THIS century) was probably the Luongo deal, which turned into a real albatross for both the Canucks and Roberto himself. No matter how good a player might be, too many bad things can happen in such a long time frame.

I think you forgot the deal that the Islanders did with Rick DiPietro in 2006, for 15 years and $67.5 million. DiPietro was recently released by the AHL and is now looking for a job at McDonald's in your hometown.

How about Ilya Bryzgalov, given $51 million for 9 years by the Flyers in a panic move. Bryzgalov was playing with the Las Vegas Wranglers earlier this year. You ever check out a Wranglers game JC?

There was also Alexei Yashin.

He wanted a longer deal, so it is what it is...
Cam Talbot isn't ready yet, and for all we know, he could be the next Dan Blackburn as well...

This Dolan wastes money as well..look at his Knicks..truly a trainwreck for a once proud franchise

Dolan has a lot of money and he is not afraid to spend it, but he is no George Steinbrenner. Steinbrenner used to go after guys who were proven winners (Reggie Jackson being the classic example), whereas Dolan is just out to get a marquis name or names, regardless of whether the player is a winner. In the case of the Knicks, they went out and got two superstars (Stoudamire and Anthony, although Stoudamire is a shell of his former self) who need spacing and get in each other's way. Dolan saying he expected this year's Knicks team to compete for a championship is comical. Even before they lost Tyson Chandler to injury (a huge blow because nobody else on their team can defend the post), they were barely a playoff team, now they are a flat out joke of the NBA.

JC,

Here is NESN's 10 worst contracts in NHL history. The Luongo deal does make the list, but only at #6. The two I mentioned are in the top 3, along with a deal done by Montreal........

You've proven my original point very well, namely that long-term contracts are just plain stupid. Too bad only 10 are shown, but I'm very happy that one of them was Komisarek, as I neglected to mention that superbly boneheaded deal as one of my examples!

Scott Gomez, seven years, $51.5 million: He signed the monster deal with the Habs in 2009

"NESN Staff" need to do better research

2007/07/01 Signed as an unrestricted free agent by the New York Rangers to a seven-year contract.

A source told me the Leafs were ready to open the vault for "King Henrik" realizing that their goaltending situation is in shambles without a legit #1 'tender (Reimer is really just an AHL goalie and Bernier a good back up)

You could also make a case for Grabovski being in the top 10 - signed a 5 year extension then bought out a year later by Nonis (a.k.a 'Brian Burke light')

In fact, here's what Grabo had to say at the time:

"They know I love to play here and they did everything to keep me here," Grabovski said. "I'm enjoying being part of this organization."

even more:

One of the first things new coach Randy Carlyle did after taking over for Ron Wilson was bump Grabovski up in the lineup.

"The competitiveness that he displays and the size that he is proves to us that little men can compete," said Carlyle. "He's displayed it and he's been rewarded for it."

"This coach come here and he believe in me," said Grabovski.

but a year later ...

Move — called “a mistake” by player’s agent — comes one day before Grabovski’s wedding.

In an expletive-laced Thursday night interview/rant with TSN’s Jonas Siegel, Grabovski called Carlyle “a stupid coach” and a “(bleeping) idiot” for how he was used at times last season, especially in the playoffs.

The timing of his wedding, the buyout and the upheaval of finding a new team had him seething about how he was deployed by Carlyle.

“Don’t put me on a (bleeping) third line and then (bleeping) play (me) six minutes in a game,” Grabovski said. “I play in the KHL (in the lockout). I make lots of (bleeping) points and what’s going to happen? He make me (expletive) play on the fourth line and he puts me in the playoffs on the fourth line and third line again.

oh my ...

True, but didn't Montreal agree to take on that contract after Gomez had already sucked for the Rangers for 2 years?

Yes sir, and that is the main reason Bob Gainey in no longer the GM, not only did he take on that albatross of a contract but he also gave the Rangers stud Dman Ryan McDonagh in the process.

Don't forget

McDonagh was only a throw in on the deal

The " stud " we were supposed to get back was local product Christopher Higgins ( what a piece of shit )

Word out of Long Island is that head coach Jack Capuano might not make it past the weekend. The Isles are on a tailspin and this is the last thing the owner expected after agreeing to sell the farm in acquiring soon-to-be free agent Thomas Vanek from the Sabres.

One prominent name being thrown around to replace Capuano is former Tampa Bay coach Guy Boucher, who's coaching techniques might be better-suited for a younger team like the Islanders.

They better get their ass in gear, as they're moving to the Barclay's Center in 2014

Michael Grabner has been in a tailspin offensively over the last 2 seasons

This franchise hasn't had stability in goal for years :help:

Quite a turnaround from the proud cup years

Islander fans deserve better

La Fontaine should have took this job

Good points, Smuler.

But on the Lafontaine point, there was no job on the island to take. The owner seems to be in love with Garth Snow, so i doubt Garth Snow is going anywhere.

They also thought they had taken care of their goaltending woes by re-signing Nabakov, but he hasn't had a good year.

I'll tell you something: I think the Islanders were better with Matt Moulson in the line-up than with Thomas Vanek. On top of giving away Moulson, which was a terrible mistake in my opinion, they gave away top picks for a player that likely isn't re-signing with the Isles. Giving away the picks alone would have been more than enough for Vanek. Giving away John Taveras' favorite linemate in that deal was bad, bad, bad!
