A Tale of Two Teams

Joe Nieuwendyk will get his number retired tomorrow, joining the other retired Calgary numbers: Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald and Al MacInnis. All good players, certainly.

But just compare them to the retired numbers of the Red Wings, ALL among the greatest players of all time: Howe, Lindsay, Abel, Sawchuk, Delvecchio, Yzerman, Lidstrom!!!!!!!!!

I thought this was an interesting comparison since Calgary and Detroit are both retiring numbers this week within a couple of days of each other.

Mule! Nyquist! Legwand!

Domination!

Wings: very good results since the Olympics...WITHOUT Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Helm, Weiss. And with an Alfie at far less than 100%.

Jimmy Howard did NOT play tonight! The Monster was not great but Detroit plays much better in front of him than in front of Howard.

Quotes:

Peter DeBoer on the Mule: "He's an elite player. He's a force out there."

David Legwand on his new teammates: "They're world-class players. Gus is speed and skill and Mule is a big body that can skate. He's deadly from the top of the circle in."

Quite true, but unfortunately Calgary has struggled in recent times and with Brian Burke now there the situation only rates to worsen...probably for many years to come. Also, Calgary has made some grave errors in judgement: two shining examples are giving up on Brett Hull and Marty St. Louis.

In Detroit, we will see Datsyuk and Zetterberg going up to the rafters soon after they end their brilliant careers - which I hope will be MANY years in the future.

In Calgary, the only other one I can see going up will be Jarome.

Pavel and Z-burg are at the near end of their careers as father time is catching up with them now as the injuries are starting to pile up.... their best is behind them now, they will be lucky to each play 40-60 games for maybe 2 more seasons and see diminished stats.

Correct you are Smuler, and if you come to GG4 we will talk shop about our teams who hopefully will have played each other in this seasons playoffs.

The Rangers passing of the puck on the powerplay was impressive last night with St Louis and Richards clicking as if they were back in Tampa

The Wings are in MSG tomorrow afternoon.....

We both have almost the same pts so far

Should be good

Maybe Marty will be able to revive Richards' career. At 38 Marty is still great!

I'm sure most hockey fans hope you're wrong. It will be a huge loss for the Wings when these two greats retire but it will also be a huge loss for the entire hockey world. Datsyuk is still the most skilled hockey player in the world and Henk is not only the best leader in hockey today but was also having an MVP-type season until the injuries came.

It's been 10 years since Todd Bertuzzi almost killed Steve Moore

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-p...-attack-on-steve-moore-changed-160107486.html

Why this piece of shit is still in hockey is mindboggling to me

MSG just mentioned that in the last 10 years, Bertuzzi has earned 29 million

Interested to see what Brad May and Marc Crawford will say on the witness stand

May was from the Bobby Clarke school of pussies...

I think a lot of the damage actually happened 'after' the Bertuzzi punch, when Moore fell onto the ice & everyone else (including his own teammates) piled onto him. And thus lies the problem: how can his lawyers prove that Bertuzzi's punch was the actual cause of the damage suffered by Moore and not the resulting pile-up?

Well it was good for King Henrik with a couple of milestones. Not so good for the Wings - another loss with Jimmy Howard in nets (ho hum).

Detroit loses to NY Rangers again

They were shutout 3-0 by the Rangers, the second time this has happened this season.

Detroit is now a 2-player team and those two players are once again injured. They're getting old & their body is starting to break down. I'd trade both Datsyuk & Zetterberg during the off-season since they'll never get a higher return for those once-great players. It's time to tear down the house & start over. This team will not make the playoffs and unless they start the rebuild after this season, it'll be a few years before the Red Wings return to the playoffs. It'll be the late 60's to late 70's again when Detroit fans were stuck with years of ineptitude.

The European scouts have saved this team's bacon for two decades & they're luck has run out. The North Americans scout have been totally awful all along & rarely do their high picks amount to anything.

It wouldn't surprise me if coach Mike Babcock escape this sinking ship once his contract runs out. Who could blame him?

Boy are you ever wrong! First, BESIDES Pav and Henk, the Wings have the Mule, Alfie (admittedly, he won't be around for long), and Kronwall plus a great group of young players such as Nyquist, Tatar, DeKeyser, etc.

Unfortunately, there have been two main problems this year: 1. Injuries - I never use injuries as an excuse and I'm not using it as an excuse now, but this has been a HELL of a year for injuries with the Wings (fact, not excuse - and the point is that injuries will not always be as bad as this year). 2. Jimmy Freakin' Howard - the guy has NOT been close to good this year and his teammates know it. The Monster might not be great but the Wings CAN win for him...which they CAN'T for Howard. I'm thinking that Howard's days are numbered...which is a GOOD thing.

As for trading two of the greatest players in the world: forget it! When they WERE uninjured this year, they were typically great - in fact Z was playing the best he ever has. Sure, they're getting a bit older but they're still both several years younger than Marty St. Louis! And need I remind you that Gordie Howe played till he was 52, and that he scored 103 points at the age of 41 to come 3rd in the scoring race behind Espo and Bobby Hull (AND to register the third-highest point total EVER up until that time!)? Granted, there was only one Mr. Hockey...but it would be crazy to write off Pav and Henk at this point!

Totally correct on your first sentence (except for the last 5 or 6 words).

Completely wrong on your second sentence. For one thing they haven't HAD any "high picks" for decades because they've always done well in the standings...unlike perennial cellar dwellers like the leafs who - due to their repeated failures to make the playoffs and their constant position as one of the doormats of the league - have had plenty of high draft picks but have totally squandered them due to the habitual and laughable incompetence of Leaf management.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but this is the fact: DETROIT SUCKS. And another fact is that no one sees them improving over the next 5 years. Too many old players, too many average-to-marginal players. Very average goaltending. The only thing saving them from the basement is the fact they have one of the league's best coaches.

Josh Gorges gone for 4 weeks

Montreal Canadiens defenceman Josh Gorges underwent successful surgery Monday morning to repair a fracture in his left hand.

He is expected to miss the next four weeks of action.

Gorges is believed to have suffered the injury while blocking a shot during Montreal's win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.

The Canadiens added to their defensive depth last week by acquiring veteran Mike Weaver from the Florida Panthers.

Gorges has one goal and 12 assists with a plus- 7 rating through 63 games this season.

Poor guy - he's # 2 in the league in blocking shots and the irony is that he probably didn't even have to block any shots in that game because it was clear that the Habs would beat Toronto in any case.
