Detroit Over Boston on Canadian Thanksgiving Day

Two great teams, one great game.

Detroit wins....WITHOUT an injured Jimmy Howard(!). "The Artist Formerly Known as the Monstrosity" turns into "the Monster" by stopping 28 of 30 shots for a .933 save percentage against last season's Stanley Cup finalists. As predicted, Mike Babcock and his staff have given a complete re-birth to the goalie NOW known as "the Monster".

3 Stars: 1. The Monster 2. Pavel Datsyuk (as usual) 3. Henrik Zetterberg (as usual).

Datsyuk wove his usual magic. First he took the puck away from the great Patrice Bergeron (!!!), who along with Jonathan Toews is one of only TWO players on the planet even close to Pav's ability as a TWO-WAY player. Take a minute to comprehend that fact: Pav didn't just take the puck away from any opponent (something he could do in his sleep), he took it away from the great Patrice Bergeron! THEN he followed up by going through the whole team...including Zdeno Chara (who, since the retirement of Nick Lidstrom, is the best D-man in the game). THEN he threaded a perfect pass to Henk. For anyone else on the planet, this sequence would be the greatest of their lives...for Pavel Datsyuk it's just a typical day at the office.

Do yourselves a favor and go to NHL.com where they have a special video feature showing a handful of Datsyuk's thousands of magical displays. The guy must be a descendant of Merlin the Magician - unbelievable skill!

Look behind you.
Notice who is second from the bottom again..... Another dismal year ahead for an Oiler fan.

I would have more faith if they got rid of Dubynk, Lowe and MacT. Still a fan and always will be but after 5 years of top draft picks and no improvement. They have the highest goals against at 29, underachieving draft picks, very poor management and questionable coaching.

The problem is they drafted the same type of players with all those high draft picks and no defense. Justin Schultz was not a draft pick of theirs btw and just happened to win the JS sweepstakes but then again JS is not a great dman, he is a good offensive dman tho.

If they want to be taken serious as a hockey club in a year or 2 then they need to trade one of Yak, Hall, Rnh, or Eberle for a stud dman and goalie/prospects/picks. Then again they likely will keep those four and stay mediocre. I feel for Dallas Eakins but it would not surprise me if he gets them turned around sooner than later, he is a very good coach especially with youngsters like he has.

The Oilers' main problem continues to be poor goaltending. Like a few other teams in the league, they have two #2 goalies. A frustrated Oiler fan might even push it further and tell you that the Oilers have two #3 goalies.

Defence continues being a problem, almost as much as the goaltender situation. The only major addition to their defence was Justin Schultz, but he's an offensive-minded defenceman. Offense isn't really a problem, but their top players keep giving the puck away & often wind up paying the price for it.

Nail Yakupov is no favorite of coach Dallas Eakins & it wouldn't surprise me to see Yakupov being packaged elsewhere in order to obtain a bonafide #1 goalie & a top defenceman.

There's quite a bit of talk that James Reimer could be headed elsewhere considering several teams are short of quality goalies, but i don't buy it. The Leafs right now have a very valuable commodity in the fact they have two true #1 goalies on their team. Very few teams in the league have such goaltending depth. Plus, there's the fact that the only time Randy Carlyle ever gave more than 60 starts to a goalie occurred in his first year of coaching when he had Giguere & Bryzgalov as his two goalies.

Reimer & Bernier are two quality individuals who are both very team-oriented. They are both extremely well-liked by their teammates and coaching staff. Reimer has a very cap-friendly contract & the Leafs would be very foolish to part with him. Unless they get an offer-they-can't-refuse, of course.

I am one of those fans. I would trade 2 of our 5 top picks for a solid goalie. If a team scores 5 goals it does not matter if 6 are scored against them. And yes management has to go, hiring MacT back after firing him in the past made no sense.

I agree that trading one of the top 5 players on the team would make sense, since there will come a day when the team won't be able to pay all of them.

On the other hand, i think that the team's management team is currently as stable as it ever was. McTavish was hired as a GM. He was fired (unfairly, in my opinion) as a coach. Hiring Dallas Eakins was a very good move. But Eakins can only do so much. I'm certain that McTavish and Lowe didn't expect the team to come out of the blocks as slowly as they did, nor did the expect Dubnyk to falter as much. I'm certain they won't press the panic button and instead will wait to see if the team can turn it around.

Philly pressed the panic button and things haven't changed. It wouldnt' surprise me to see them panic again and trade their star player and captain, Claude Giroux, which they've been prone to in the past when faced with even much less adversity. If not Giroux, i wouldn't be surprised to see them trade Couturier, Voracek or Brayden Schenn. However, i'd expect them to replace Paul Holmgren with Ron Hextall before any trades are made.

Quotes From Patrick Roy

"We're a long way before we're getting where the Red Wings are. It's amazing what they've been doing over the years. They've been there every year. They've got a great GM. Ken Holland has been doing a super job there. Babcock is a really good coach. They draft well....Zetterberg and Datsyuk, all those guys. They should be proud of what they've been doing."

Obviously Patrick knows hockey!
